Meet Weston Hale of Quail and Kale Urban Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Weston Hale.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wasn’t happy with my unhealthy lifestyle, so I wanted to get into better shape and start eating healthy foods. I started by making kale shakes, but then thought how easy it would be to grow my own, more nutritious kale along with other vegetables.

I also started researching raising and caring for chickens, but in my research, I read something about quail and their eggs and realized that quail eggs were far more nutritious than chicken eggs and the birds were cleaner and easier to keep.

From there, I started keeping a few quail, and people from work started buying quail eggs from me. I then thought about branching out and selling quail eggs at a farmer’s market.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been much of a challenge other than the typical things that go along with starting up a small business from obtaining an LLC, licensing, insurance, etc., along with holding down another job and working it all into my daily schedule.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Basically, I raise quail and sell quail eggs. That’s really what sets me apart from all the others, are the quail eggs. I am most proud of the fact that I raise happy, healthy birds and they produce healthy, nutritious eggs.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to continue to grow my business and get the word out about how healthy and versatile quail eggs truly are. I would also like to sell my quail eggs at several different farmer’s markets and increase the number of restaurants and chefs I sell quail eggs to.
