Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Anderson.
Wendy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a pre-law major in my freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, but quickly got sidetracked by my interest in advertising and marketing. Following graduation, I worked for more than 20 years as a media planner and buyer at several advertising agencies in Chicago, then as a marketing director at retail and consumer services companies in Arizona. While I loved negotiating deals and managing national marketing programs, I felt there was more for me to accomplish. I wanted to make a true impact in my community and to do that. I needed to change my focus.
When I was 46, I entered law school and graduated two years later as valedictorian. From my corporate experience, I knew I wanted to focus on business and corporate law. I had seen first-hand how important a solid business contract was, and I understood the potential ramifications of not having that contract when a dispute arose. Business is all about relationships – with business partners, with customers, with employees – and it’s my goal to help clients protect their business when they begin new relationships.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting to this point in my career has been a great journey. Doing the significant amount of work required in law school was a challenge, as it is for everyone, but I loved every minute of it. When I started law school, I had two teenage daughters, and I struggled to be able to give them the time and attention they deserved while doing what I had to do for school. I was lucky, though. My parents lived in town and were able to help often, and the girls were of an age that they understood my pressures and fully supported what I was doing.
Since starting my solo practice, my challenges have been similar to any entrepreneur. Doing the legal work is exciting and I love knowing that with each client I help, I’m getting better and better. The daily focus is finding the time to meet prospective customers to build the business.
Law Office of Wendy Anderson – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a solo practitioner, so I work directly with every client. What’s unique about what I offer is a legal perspective with a business background. I understand what my clients are facing because I likely had similar situations in my corporate positions. I managed expenses, I hired suppliers, I handled situations with employees, and I re-prioritized on a regular basis given the daily challenges that were thrown at me! In business, it’s critical to resolve issues quickly so that you can move on to find new clients and make new sales. It’s my goal, after speaking with my clients, to get to the heart of the matter and focus on resolving the issues we can, as quickly as we can.
My areas of focus are contracts, business and corporate law, and employment law. I help entrepreneurs start their companies. I work with business owners to draw up agreements with their clients, employees, contractors, and partners – intending to provide total transparency about the business relationship so that misunderstandings and disputes are less likely to happen. But if they do happen, I help my client resolve the issue through negotiation with the other party.
I think I’m different from other attorneys in that I genuinely see myself as a partner. I want my clients to feel free to call anytime they have a question or problem so that we can decide the best plan of action before a situation gets worse. I respect my clients for the expertise they have in running their business so it’s a relationship between peers – we have our own “zones of genius.” I’ve been practicing since 2015, and I’m proud of the fact that I’m still working with clients who came to me then.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is doing something I love while helping someone else with a problem. I know that many business owners have never spoken with an attorney before and they may be well-aware of the many negative stereotypes about us. It creates a stressful situation from the start. Given that, I feel tremendous satisfaction when a client tells me that the work I’ve done or the advice I’ve given them has lifted a weight off their shoulders. I feel like I am successful when my clients truly know that I have their back. Having a client tell me that working with me was a pleasure is what makes me realize I’ve made the right decisions.
