Meet Jean-Christophe Gros of Voilà French Bistro in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean-Christophe Gros.

Jean, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started visiting the USA every year since 2007. So, in 2007, we stayed in Scottsdale one night just before visiting the Grand Canyon: we definitely fell in love with the city and Arizona. So, during several years, we thought it would be great to have our restaurant here as we lead hotels/restaurants in France… In 2015, we decided it was time for us to try our dream and decided to move here. We started our research in May 2015 and on September 16th, we arrived to start our new life and take over Voilà the 1st of October.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not an easy decision: start over with our 10-year-old daughter and leave behind us all our family and friends… But we quickly adapted ourselves to our new life thanks, beautiful encounters who helped us every day in our installation steps: find a place to live, a car, a school for our daughter who doesn’t speak English, do the driver’s license exam, without speaking about the administrative side …!

As for the restaurant, we also had to find the right products because, after 34 years of experience, chef Jean-Christophe wants to offer his “new” customers a real reflection of true French cuisine. Almost 2 years were needed to find the right products. Each day, the chef continues to look for novelties to discover to our guests. It also had to adapt to the American culture. We learned for example, that Americans don’t like to see whole fish; we tried to serve the whole Dover sole but each time, people asked us to prepare it! So, today, we only propose the filet. They also like to share a dish for several people; something that is not done in France.

Voilà French Bistro – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Chef Jean-Christophe proposes the real French cuisine. You can find some dishes which can be eaten in restaurant like the duck Foie Gras, but he also serves dishes that a French housewife can prepare for her families like the Beef Bourguignon or Chicken Basquaise. The proudest of our company is everything is homemade!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To be happy every day in our life with our family and in our job
