Meet Victoria McRoy of Transformed in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria McRoy.

Victoria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started cosmetology school when I was 16 years old. The program I attended was a trade school for high school students that took 2 years to complete. In May of 2011 I graduated high school, cosmetology school, and turned 18 al within a week.

My first job was as an assistant at a salon in northern Peoria. I was able to co-learn and aid the owner as well as learn from the other stylists from the months of August to February the next year.

In February of 2012 I started taking my own clientele and growing my business. Things grew quickly, I started creating things like my business name, brand and social media.

In June of 2013 I moved to a rental salon up the street, called Salon Kokomo, and completely went solo. I’ve been at Salon Kokomo, now Inspire Salon, for almost 5 years and have really hone in on my clientele, branding, and social media.

Along with working in the salon and doing on-site weddings, I work part time for a professional color company called Kenra Professional. I started two years ago and I absolutely love it! I travel on Mondays, all over Arizona, educating fellow hairstylist on our products and trending hair techniques.

Relationships is something that is extremely important to me and I’m so lucky that I get to not only get to know and build relationships with my clientele but with other Cosmetologists around the valley.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, lots of bumps and growing pains along the way. Trends, techniques, and other aspects of my industry are constantly changing. Adapting plans and receiving continual education is imperative.

Besides normal things that come with the industry…the first two years of my career the owner of the salon I working at was cheating me, treating me like an employee (making me request days off, telling me what days to work, etc.) but was taxing me as an independent contractor. Being only 18/19 years old, I had no idea she was taking advantage of me but once I was aware it really pushed me to understand and take ownership of myself and my business. Even though it was hard at the time, I’m actually grateful it happened, I truly believe it was what gave me the vision and drive to pursue my dreams and make them a reality!

Please tell us about Transformed.
I’m all about transformations. Not just exterior transformations, like major haircut or color changes, but internal transformations too. My heart is that every person who sits in my chair would feel empowered, valued, and beautiful. I see myself as an artist and I truly believe art becomes profound when it EXPOSES US, EXPLAINS US, AND INSPIRES US and I feel like my purpose is to be a translator of beauty. My goal is to use media and the beauty industry to transform the world one person at a time.

I provide a wide range of services behind the chair….
I’m a color specialist, best known for and sought out for my balayage and ombre looks. These technique are becoming more common but there is still a large percentage of hairstylist that still don’t know how to create these looks. Not only can I provide exactly what my clients are looking for but I teach this technique, to other hairstylists, all over Arizona.

I have a very diverse clientele when it comes to haircuts. I provide haircuts for women, men, and children. I create a variety of looks from short pixie cuts or current/on trend men’s haircuts, to long layered haircuts. Whether it’s straight or curly, long or short, I have the education and experience to handle every clients distinct hair needs.

Lastly, I provide on-site makeup and up styling for both wedding and special occasion events. I average about 10 weddings a year and travel all over our beautiful state.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Start building in the location you want to grow your business in!!

For the last 7 years I have been growing my business and clientele in the Glendale area. If I could do it again, I’d start downtown. The atmosphere and culture better reflects me and instead of building and someday moving, I could be right where I want to be without losing clientele or partially starting over.
