Meet Veronica Wierer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Wierer.

Veronica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Veronica. I am from Green Bay, Wisconsin. I started photographing when I was young around 5 or 6 years old. I liked to photograph everything. I had a Fisher Price film camera that I would carry everywhere. My parents would always get my film developed, even though most of the pictures weren’t very good.

I continued to take pictures for fun in middle school. Then in high school, I joined FFA and was elected the official position of The Reporter. This position meant I got to report and photograph everything our chapter did. I also was in the yearbook which was one of my favorite classes to take. I loved to break away and photograph trips and assignments.

In college, I studied Communication, Photography and Design at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. It was a very eye opening experience and one I will never forget. I had some great professors and mentors. This was around the time I started to photograph senior portraits and used the knowledge of what I learned. I also had an internship with the UWGB’s University Marketing and Communication Department as a photographer. It gave me a lot of field experience and I got to meet a lot of amazing people on and off campus.

After college, I helped out a local studio in Green Bay. I began to develop my skills in the field and meet more photographers in the area. A few years later I got the travel bug and moved to Phoenix. I did an internship with the Green Living Magazine in Scottsdale, AZ. Dori and Amanda were fun to work with. There were a lot of opportunities to do different things. I picked up a lot of tips and tricks.

Currently, I am still living in Phoenix and I love it. There is so much to explore and the city is very vibrant. I also love how easy it is to get out of the city and back to nature. To this day, my family and friends are very supportive and encouraging. I wouldn’t have been able to get to this point without them and I will always be thankful for having them in my life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every job comes with challenges and Photography is not easy to get into. There are a lot of downfalls that can discourage you but I think As you go if you love it you embrace those downfalls and turn them into learning opportunities. Starting people assume you need a lot of money to buy fancy equipment but it is not the case. You can buy used items or rent or swap with other photographers. Getting the word out is also really challenging. Today, we have social media but I have found that just being out and about and meeting people can be just as useful.

Tell us more about your work.
I am very down to earth and easy to work with. I see a lot of other photographers go through their library of photos and create the same images over and over. With my background, I have a unique perspective.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I grew up in Wisconsin and when I was a kid I had a blue fisher price film camera. I used to photograph everything. My parents would develop all of the films even though the pictures weren’t very good. I was very shy growing up so being behind a camera felt more comfortable for me. I am very big into comics and superheroes. Superman was a reporter and Spider-Man was always taking pictures and that was why I grew to love them.
