Meet Verónica Aponte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Verónica Aponte.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am Latin-American Cross Practice Conceptual Artist born and raised in Caracas-Venezuela. I finished my undergrad studies at “I.U.E.S.A.P.A.R.,” which it was the most important experimental institution for the visual arts in Venezuela in the 90’s and 2000’s. I’ve been living in Phoenix, AZ for over 15 years. Before moving to Phoenix, I lived in Mexico City for an Art Residency at “El Centro de La imagen” and “El Centro Nacional de las Artes” where I produced a photo-based body of work on the feminine-masculine stereotypes, and sexual harassment in the Metro.

Being interested in feminist art, I found myself, growing up after all these years outside Venezuela (with no minor’s difficulties to return) interested now in working phenomenologies of memory, anchored into Latin-America Modernity’s nostalgia, and how historical geopolitics influences public spaces, experiences, and remembrances through the exploration of past movements in Latin-American Art, with their European avant-garde influences. I recently finished my MFA Intermedia program at Arizona State University and relocating to San Diego, CA.

Please tell us about your art.
I currently use Video- Photo-Film (found and own) Performance, Installation, and Post-Digital Practices to approach issues of gender, urban and cultural identity. Within my practice, I re-interpreted objects and memorabilia, creating challenging objects and installation spaces inviting the audience to think beyond the present political moment, visiting history.

As I said before, I am a Cross Practice Conceptual Artist. I use different media to convey my ideas. Each given project will require a unique technical and conceptual resolution. It could be drawings, objects, motion pictures, prints, collages, performances or installations, maybe something else. I am inspired in part by the Fluxus, and my art has to do with the human experience. I can say all my practice has a performance-based outline, and it is derived from performance even if there is not a performance to show. I want people to find art not so easy to label, and I want people to see beauty in thinking.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
How significant and complicated question! Art is not just about the Art Market, but its influence is vast! My role as an artist is to bridge art and my art practice to an audience that is not always familiar with contemporary art practices and to show that these practices are an essential aspect of culture as Literature, Philosophy, and Education to name three examples. Art fairs can be enjoyable but as an artist, I have to talk about the human condition in my work, and I have to be true to myself and others regardless the latest tendencies in international or local art fairs. There is a mystical role of interconnecting the work of art and members of the audience, that is looking to trigger thinking and self-realization.
