Meet Tyler Cadwell of Everything Etched

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Cadwell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tyler. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been the creative type and wanted to run my own business. But the inspiration for Everything Etched came from my mother. She came to me one day, showing me a picture of this wine cork holder and saying “make this for me” Of course, because she’s my mother, I did as I was told. It was a 4’ tall box that said keep calm and drink wine and she loved it. She loved it so much, she cried. I saw how creating an amazing piece that has special meaning could really move someone.

I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without the support of my mother and father. They were the ones that allowed me to move back home and set up shop in their garage when I couldn’t afford to do it on my own. My mom made me meals as I stayed glued to my computer, building the site. My dad, helping me pack orders late into the night. I’m truly lucky to have them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There definitely has been a few challenges along the way. There were 3 big challenges that stand out. One, having to sleep at the office for 8 months when I was getting started because I couldn’t afford to pay myself, much less have my own place. Two, having one of my machines catch fire and almost burn down my office. I had to work all day, then drive 45 minutes to the Tech Shop where I could use their machines until late in the night, just to keep up with orders. The third has happened a few times. We get an explosion of sales around a holiday, each time more than we expect. I had to work 20-hour shifts just to keep up.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the one taking things apart and trying to put them back together. It would drive my parents nuts because they would get me a toy for Christmas and within a few hours, I would be taking it apart seeing how it worked. I also love to be creative. I liked to draw and build with legos. As I got older, I would build forts out of wood, skate ramps and other interesting creations.
