Meet Ty McEwen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty McEwen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As long as I can remember I have been drawing and creating art. I grew up in a small rural area and always had a love a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. So naturally, I was influenced by the things I saw all around me. I loved drawing cactus, rock formations and plant and animal life. As I was about to graduate high school I needed to pick a path so to speak, I wanted to create my own art, be my own boss, and work with my hands. At the time I was exposed to tattoo magazines and saw that tattoos could be more like fine oil paintings on the skin. So began my journey to learn how to tattoo, after several years of having doors slammed in my face I was able to get my foot in the door at a shop in Texas. And I have been perfecting my style and technique ever since.

Please tell us about your art.
I take natural shapes, objects, and influence and exaggerate the flow, death, texture, and lighting. I fit and form these shapes to the human body and to canvas and paper alike. I like to show the conflict between the beauty and the harsh found in nature, to see how delicate and how tough the world can be. I think this resonates with us on a deeper level. I think that into today’s world we are progressing in a lot of ways, and yet forgetting the stillness of the outdoors. I create tattoos, and oil paintings mostly. But I table in other mediums here and there.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
