Today we’d like to introduce you to Tu’mya Torrence.
Tu’mya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always been into fashion and loved the way people can express themselves through the clothes that they wear. In high school, I took a fashion class and ever since then I been on a roll. I never took fashion seriously, I always just thought it would be a hobby of mines. As time went on, I decided to open up a business because I was a college student that didn’t want to work a nine to five. The first business that I open was called “bossupstyles,” everything started off good but I made a mistake by spending the money I earned on myself instead of putting it back into my business. Also, I am a pre-med college student, so I was always busy and never had extra time. Everything went downhill with “Bossupstyles,” sadly. I decided to focus on school and save up money so that I can invest into myself again. After I had enough money saved, I decided to start all over. I didn’t want to make the same mistakes as I did before. As I started “Bossculture,” I made sure I wrote everything i did down and I made sure I invested back into myself. Having my own business had become more than just a hobby to me, it became part of my everyday life. Starting my own business has helped me grow in so many different ways, and I’m extremely thankful for that. Seeing how so many people support me makes we want to expand and go so far with this. I might be a pre-med student, but fashion will always have my heart!
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing good is easy to get, it will always be obstacles along the way! Of course, I had struggles. There have been many times I wanted to close down my business and give up, but giving up will never solve our problems. An advice I can give women, especially young women because I am 21 is that never give up no matter how hard it is! Starting your own business takes patience, time, and money. Start by writing all the ideas you have down than make sure you do your research on the type of items you want to put on your website and the type of audience you want to attract. And you have to realize one day you might sell out of everything in your store and another day you might now sell nothing at all, but that a part of being patient. The biggest advice I can give, it just never give up no matter how hard it gets.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is called “bossculture,” it is an online boutique. I sell women and men’s clothing and accessories. The most thing I’m proud of as a brand is to say I put all my hard work and effort into something and people really support me and love the things I do with my brand, that’s one of the best feelings ever. What makes bossculture different is that once the items are out of stock, they will be replaced with new items. I never restock the same items; i feel that gives people the excitement to see what’s going to be on the website next.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I do feel like our city is good for a business like mine because when you think about it, there’s not a lot of ladies in Phoenix, Arizona that is doing something like this which can bring something different to Phoenix. For any women or young ladies that’s starting out just make sure you have a plan and never give up on your plan! I do feel like our city can support upcoming artist and entrepreneurs more and help them brand themselves as well.
