Today we’d like to introduce you to Tudor Alexander.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a professional ballroom dancer, author, and entrepreneur. I have been dancing for 15 years and compete nationally with my students and professional partner. I am currently writing a book that compiles all the most meaningful strategies and life lessons I’ve learned as a competitive athlete in the world of dancing into a workable manual for anyone looking to navigate their life’s changes and create their dreams. I call it “Dance Your Way Through Life: An Instruction Manual” and hope to release it by the summer of this year along with a workbook, video courses, and other resources. It will be a reflection of my own unique style of teaching which is a combination of personal growth with ballroom dancing. I also host a weekly podcast called “The Dance of Life” where I discuss my biggest takeaways in the areas of Entrepreneurship, Gratitude, and Transformation. This year, another dancer and close friend of mine, started a motivational clothing company and I am preparing a gratitude course for a meditation app that I have been highly successful on as a teacher called Insight Timer. I have played the piano for 25 years and have released numerous albums, and I just love the creative process. I believe we are all here to create and share our own individual story with the world and I am delighted to be making a living by empowering others to do the same.
Please tell us about your art.
I create art in a variety of different forms. I have published my poetry and many philosophical or self-help articles, I do all my own design work and used to paint in oils as a kid. I dance professionally and create moving sculptures through the movements of my students when I train them to express a story. I have created video stories through video editing, and I have published my voice in a wide range of audio content from guided meditations to poetry and informational podcasts. I also compose and play music regularly, having composed dozens of pieces and published several albums for free on the Internet from pop style to classical.
For a while it was a little scattering with all of these various skillsets and, to be honest, one day I said to myself “Ok, basically I can create anything I want – so now what. What’s the point?” There had to be a line through all of those things rather than just creating randomly or what was fun at the time. We only have 24 hours in the day, after all, and at some point, as you become successful all of your parts need to align just like if you are trying to dance in a coordinated fashion. If your legs are moving one way, but your arms are going the other – it just doesn’t work out in the long run.
When I looked over the course of my art and what was successful about it, as well as what I liked to produce and who I liked to produce it for, I found the answer in a common theme. My art was healing, and I was a healer. From the work that I did with my dance students to help free them to express themselves, to the music that I played at the Mayo Clinic for the cancer patients every week, to the words that I spoke and wrote with the aim to help people and inspire them to take action in their life – all of the art I produced was a reflection of my desire to heal both myself and others.
Art is healing, and we as artists are healers. I believe that we are all searching and craving art because we are all craving healing. Art is the medium by which we connect to something universal – a story, an experience, a life lesson, a memory – and through that connection remember a part of ourselves that was forgotten when the trauma of an impermanent reality took it away.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I am always full of things to talk about because I like to talk 🙂 Perhaps the singular lesson that comes to mind immediately is to continually reaffirm your belief in yourself. What you believe will absolutely determine your actions, and as an artist, you must believe in your work before anyone else. This is the journey and one which we will never master because there is always a new work, a new project – a new and exciting challenge on the horizon that will change our belief.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
