Meet Deborah Allen and Maya Henley of Tru Nutrition in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Allen and Maya Henley.

Deborah and Maya, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
All my adult life I’ve searched for a way to earn extra income from my passion for helping others, in a way that would improve their sense of well being. My business partner Maya has always desired to be her boss and also has a heart for helping others. Even though Maya is a millennial and I’m a Baby Boomer we found common ground and alignment in our purpose, We were both independent Herbalife distributors building a part-time business when the opportunity to own a Nutrition club together presented itself.

We jumped at this exciting venture, and both were excited to bring a convenient and affordable alternative option to fast food meals and energy drinks! We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been smooth but we had a lot of support, plus we both believe in the power of prayer and consistently pray about every situation regarding our business. Maya’s husband Tory and my son Marc did the build out for our shop which saved us a ton of money. The support and advice from other Herbalife distributors who already own nutrition clubs have been invaluable. We went with our gut on some major decisions, like investing in a top of the line blender but passing on getting a commercial ice machine. Being a successful small business owner is not easy, but with God’s help and a strong partnership, we’re on our way.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our Nutrition club has a welcoming atmosphere for individuals and families. We welcome our customers to come to play games, chat about life, and sometimes just relax. It’s even a safe space to bring children where they can hang out and enjoy a treat as well. We take pride in knowing our customers on a first name basis and remembering their favorite drinks. If it’s not on the menu we will make a customized drink to ensure guaranteed satisfaction.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was an independent leader. I made friends easily and enjoyed organizing games and activities when outside playing with my friends. I wanted to be a lawyer – Maya

As a kid, I was always eager to help. I was detail oriented and still am. If we’re painting a room I’m the one painting the corners and the trim. I was an avid reader as a kid and was always involved in music in some way. I was stubborn in the sense that if you told me I couldn’t do something I’d be determined to prove I could – Deborah.
