Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Gombert.
Troy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I attended ASU and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture Design. I left AZ and moved to CA and began what I thought was my lifetime career in Architecture. After four years of design with a large architecture firm, I knew that something was missing. I loved creating and designing, but I was missing the human element. I decided to go back to school and become a dentist.
I had a calling for helping others and doing it in a way that I could have my own gig someday. After becoming a dentist and opening my own practice in 2002, the knack for design was still there. I realized then that I could combine the two and perfect my skill in cosmetic dentistry. I began taking all of the continuing education that was out there to hone my skill. I now have a dental practice that is primarily geared toward cosmetic dentistry. We specialize in smile makeovers/smile enhancements and full mouth rehabilitation. I absolutely LOVE what I do. Being able to change someone’s smile so that they in turn feel confident with their smile in amazing. A smile really is one of the most important features of our face from both a beauty perspective and a health perspective, and we are happy to help.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life worth doing is easy. Some of the struggles along the way include deciding to leave a good job to go back to school for another four years without the ability to work along the way. I went back to school at 28 as dentistry was my second career and came out of school at 32. Many of my friends were moving up the ranks in their careers, buying homes, vacationing, etc., and I was sitting there at 32 with a mountain of student loan debt in my back pocket and the need to borrow a bunch more money to open a practice. The financial burden was a bit overwhelming. But, perseverance and patience pays off. I was able to be an associate for four years to help me hone my skills before embarking on my own practice. Dealing with insurance companies and handling the business end of dentistry is still something that has to be dealt with, and is still a bit of a struggle even today. But in the end, I am very fortunate to be able to do what I do on a daily basis. I still love my career choice after 20 years of practice.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
My practice is located in the East Valley. We are right off of the 101 on Ray Road in Chandler. I feel that we are in a good spot as we are accessible to most everyone. My dental practice is a restorative based practice focusing on cosmetic dentistry. We specialize in smile makeovers and smile enhancements with porcelain veneers. Coming from a design background has helped me tremendously in this field. Design is design, whether designing homes or designing smiles. Understanding the basic principles of design is a must to be able to create extraordinary smiles. I think we have been successful in the Valley because we truly care for our patients. We listen, we provide incredible care in everything we do, and we stand behind our smiles. Do incredible work, always strive for extraordinary, and be patient. It really is that simple.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Boy that is a loaded question. I wanted to be in architecture since I was in 4th grade. I knew from that age that my design was in my blood. Funny enough, even as a kid I did not mind going to the dentist. I was a kid that needed a lot of dentistry and my dentist did a great job at always making me feel taken care of. I guess if I could have done things differently looking back, I wish I would have considered dentistry at a younger age. I am very happy with my career choice, but it would have been an easier road if I would have known about it earlier!
