Today we’d like to introduce you to Trish Vo.
Trish, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my photography journey back when I was a junior in high school. I’ve always had this creative eye when it came to photos but I never realized that I was made to be a photographer. I earned the historian position in Student Council and my responsibility was to take photos of people in my club and just candid shots of our events for our scrapbook. Our student council went on our annual Disneyland trip to learn about leadership and my friend had me take fake senior pictures of her while we were there. As an amateur, we were all shocked by the end results because the photos ended up being pretty good from someone that had no idea what she was doing. So when we got back from that trip, she had me take her official senior pictures. That was the point where my career started. With word of mouth, my business became exponentially bigger within the years and now I am getting booked out six to eight months ahead of time. Not to mention, I have had so many opportunities to work with incredible Instagram Influencers and even the Chicago White Sox. I never imagined that it would ever take me this far and I am still in shock with how far I’ve come. Sometimes, I will compare my old and new photos and it blows my mind how much I’ve learned on my own within three years.
Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has not been smooth because, in the first two years of my career, everyone doubted my ability to succeed as another photographer out here in Arizona. The industry is saturated and it takes a lot of thick skin to hear some of the people around you underestimate your capabilities and compare your work with other well known and experienced photographers. It took me a long time to stop comparing my work with other experienced photographers and stop being so harsh while critiquing my work. But now, I have finally accepted and embraced the beauty of growth in my photos.
Please tell us about your business.
I am a local Arizona photographer that specializes in senior portraits but I also photograph weddings. The main thing that I am most proud of as a photographer is that I can make my client(s) feel beautiful. I’ve had a handful of clients that have reached out and asked for me to capture candid photos of them so that they can encapsulate a certain point in their lives where they feel genuinely happy. I take pride in how I can make my clients feel when they interact and shoot with me. I always put my best energy forward to them so they feel comfortable and excited about the session. I’ve heard from most of my clients that they believe I have a special eye where I can find beauty in everything so when I shoot, I am very creative with my locations, which comes in handy since Arizona has very limited beautiful landscapes. Being able to see the beauty in things that most people would view to be mediocre or useless has been the one thing that I am most proud of.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
This city pushes me to be creative with the surroundings that we have. When I don’t have any new locations to use for my shoots, I have to take a day to myself to drive around the town to scout out new locations. But the thing that I like least about our city is that there very limited amounts of pretty sceneries nearby. I always have to drive from one to three hours to get out of the city to be able to get dreamy and non-desert scenes. Additionally, I feel that when I shoot in the city there are always people that give me the weirdest looks because I am shooting out in public.
