Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Knight.
Hi Trevor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Trevor Knight owner of Sage + Cedar Photography. My journey of becoming an artist began 8 years ago when I finished my active duty service with the United States Marine Corps. Upon leaving the service I was left feeling a bit lost, I didn’t know exactly where I would fit in as a civilian. I knew one thing for certain and that was that I felt comfortable being behind a camera and had an eye for capturing beautiful moments.
In 2017, I bought my first professional Sony camera and packed up my entire life to peruse a living by capturing wildlife. When I first got my camera I was amazed by the beauty the world has to offer. Being a prior service Marine I knew these were sights a normal person takes for granted. Out in the elements capturing the raw beauty of the creatures on Earth helped me cope with the PTSD I had developed while serving. I was shy and timid when my military service ended and Photography allowed me to put a camera between myself and people. Over the course of two years, I slowly became more comfortable with not only myself as an individual but also with my artwork.
Photography become my strongest and most distinguished voice, traveling all across the United States from the California Redwoods to the sands of the Gulf of Mexico. I took this time to build my knowledge in the photography field and also shape who I was as a person after my service.
In 2020 during the COVID pandemic, I began to utilize the skills I had built from years on the road capturing wildlife to establish myself as an elopement & wedding photographer. Much like wildlife photography, there is magic to be captured between two people when they are in love. The strong bonds and pure emotion built between a man and woman over countless months/years is really something amazing to capture. Weddings are a once-in-a-lifetime happiness for most people and it is such an honor to be able to capture those raw emotional moments.
After two more years of building my passion for wedding photography, I found myself relocating to Arizona. For me, Arizona was a place I had always felt connected to. The vast beautiful desert landscapes gave me a sense of peace and also wonder. When I am creating art, I am myself, and without it, I feel like something is missing. This journey of mine has been amazing and I look forward to building this next chapter here in Arizona.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in a creative field has its ups & downs. There are times when you feel like your passion is just a dream unworthy of being chased and times of great accomplishments.
I remember when I first started out in Photography I was constantly comparing my work to other creatives. Putting my own work down because it wasn’t receiving the same exposure as some artists. You truly are your own worst enemy in the creative field. I have learned over the years to just keep shooting.
The more you create, the more you will fail. The positive side to failing is the more you will learn from those failures. You must stay true to who you are, there is no one else that can do it better than yourself. Being unique is one of the factors that will allow your work to shine above the rest. Don’t waste your energy focusing on someone else’s dream when you should be conquering your own.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been honored to do wedding films/photography for many incredible couples. Each one of their stories is distinctive and I pride myself on creating moving films/artwork that artistically conveys those love stories. I believe weddings are not just about one day. It’s about a person’s story leading up to that day and the stories that will come after.
My wedding photography brings your wedding day to life – allowing couples to relive every laugh, every tear, and every moment that went by in a flash. I have the immense privilege of doing what I love: capturing the moment, the emotion, and the love between my clients and their families; all while making great friends along the way!
I am known for shaping a wedding day into a fun and relaxed atmosphere in order to highlight the most beautiful emotions. Afterward, deliver timeless photographs and custom works of art that will repeatedly bless the family for generations to come!
I treat every one of my clients as if they were a part of my family. My dedication to artistry and storytelling is what sets my work apart from others. I create art that draws people in, moves them, and brings their stories to life in the form of a photograph.
