Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Lobdell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my career as a hairstylist in 2008. I didn’t always know I wanted to do hair, I actually wanted to become an actress and thought doing hair would be a good side job or fall back position if acting didn’t work out. During school and after graduating from cosmetology school, I learned that I was truly passionate about the industry and I had a lot of talent and potential to do great things as a hair artist. Not only do I love the art of being a colorist, but I love meeting new people and creating relationships with each of my clients. I started my first job as a stylist at Fantastic Sams. It was a brand new location that opened up by my house and although it was a pretty slow salon at first, it was a perfect place for me to really master my craft. After working as a stylist/manager for two years, I wanted to be more independent so I decided to start a new journey by doing booth rental in a salon. I drove around to a few salons in the area and when I walked into Splitt Enzz Salon, I knew that was exactly where I needed to be. For me, working independently, making my own schedule and being able to have full creative freedom has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I currently am now an Artistic Educator for one of the fastest growing hair color companies in the industry called Pravana. I continue to work behind the chair five days a week and I get to inspire and educate other stylists about new upcoming trends and techniques. The joy of being a hairstylist/colorist not only is my hobby, but it is also and will always be my career that I will live and love forever.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe the struggles and challenges I have gone through has not only made me a better stylist but it truly has made me a better person. To become a successful stylist, you have to put a lot of work and effort to build a solid clientele. When I started as a booth renter stylist in the salon. I knew I had to make a weekly payment for my rent as well as supply all of my own tools and color. There were multiple weeks where I was so slow, I could barely make enough money to cover my rent at the salon. I put my heart and soul into marketing myself and I really focused on different ways to grow myself and my business. I even accepted a job as a part-time gymnastics coach to help make some extra money. I had to work my part-time position for two years until I really felt I was busy enough to be full time behind the chair.
My advice for other women who are just starting their journey is to never give up and to step outside your comfort zone. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but if you believe in yourself and are a dedicated, driven, passionate individual, you will achieve your dreams.
