Meet Trailblazer Stephanie Perrault

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Perrault.

Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My career began in corporate communications but I loved the art of telling a good story and soon found myself on the editorial team of an entertainment weekly. Within a few years, I was the managing editor. The work was rewarding, but I got tired of splitting my life between work and family (my husband and daughters). In 2014, I resigned my position and ventured into the world of entrepreneurship.

It was a world of possibility but also of isolation. Without the stories of other female entrepreneurs to sustain me, I would have given up.

Wanting to give other women the courage and confidence I initially lacked, I launched Create Confidently – a storytelling and content marketing brand – so that every startup and a small business owner would know how to use the power of story to unify their messaging and grow their business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is NOT easy! It can be lonely, confusing, overwhelming, and utterly discouraging, but at the end of the day, running my own business has given me the freedom I wanted to synchronize my professional and family life.

One of the most significant pieces of advice I can give to other women starting their journey is to find a community of female entrepreneurs and lean into it. A group of local women is ideal, but if you can’t find one, tap into an online community and get active in it. Being around other women who are learning and growing is crucial!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Create Confidently – what should we know?
I am an expert storyteller and content writer. I can sit down with a founder and within an hour find the heart of her story. I can do this thanks to an innovative guide I created to help companies craft a story that drives all of their content – web, print, social media, etc.

I use this StoryMap to create content for them that tells a unified story across all platforms.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I grew up in a story-rich family. For as long as I can remember, my family has communicated with stories, read stories, and retold stories.

We’d sit around after meals and tell stories about days gone by, crazy things that had happened in our lives, or funny stories we’d all heard a million times before. Spending time together and telling stories that communicated our values gave me a rich sense of belonging and an instinctive knowledge that stories matter.

I draw on my heritage often as I teach other people how to craft purposeful stories.
