Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Adelson and Sophia Kobs.
Shelley and Sophia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Shelley: I always dreamed of having my own store. When I was young, my mom and I would hunt for treasures at flea markets, so my passion for vintage finds started at an early age. When I met Sophia, she shared that same passion and over the years we began dreaming together of having our own storefront. First, we opened a booth at Antique Gatherings. A few years later, we’re ready to take that next step and began looking for retail space. When we found the space available on 5th Ave in Old Town Scottsdale, we thought it was a perfect spot.
Sophia: Shelley and I began on this venture when both of us realized our mutual love of hunting for antiques and vintage pieces to add interest to our own homes. It didn’t take long for us to know we wanted to share it with others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Shelley & Sophia: The biggest challenge was finding the right space. It was important for us to find a space with busy foot traffic. Location is crucial but it was also important for us to get a space that had the right vibe to bring our finds and treasures to life.
If your passion is strong enough, you always find a way to make it work.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Piece & Story – what should we know?
We offer antique and vintage furniture and accessories for the home. We shop year-round across the country and with overseas sources to offer a unique and interesting inventory that tells a story.
We are most proud of turning our dream into a reality and being able to offer interesting pieces at fair prices. We hand select every single piece and the best part is learning the story of each piece, and getting the opportunity to share it with our customers.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
Shelley: My mom is a big source of inspiration. I would go to flea markets with my mom as a kid and it sparked an interest that never really went away. She’s one of my biggest cheerleaders and now, she works with us at the store.
Sophia: My mom and I are avid shoppers and she’s always been a source of inspiration. When I lived in Chicago, I would go to prop sales and estate sales with friends and would learn about the pieces and their stories and my interest began to grow.
