Meet Trailblazer Pilar Aguilera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pilar Aguilera.

Pilar, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was at the crossroads of deciding my future, the beauty industry was an appealing prospect. Honestly, I wanted to be anything and everything but needed to start pursuing a career that I could be passionate about. Hair and make-up had always been in the back of my mind and I knew that with a cosmetology license I had the freedom to choose countless positions. In 2014, I obtained my Cosmetology license from Penrose Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona. After graduation, I began working in a salon for about a year. Knowing during that time that I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. So, I made the decision that I was ready to embark on a new business adventure, and go out on my own. As of today, I can proudly say I have been a salon suite owner going on four years. My business has steadily grown each year and I am excited about what’s next!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I want to be clear with this. There is no smooth road when learning a skill. Especially, when you step out into the world to engage in a career as an inexperienced hand in the field. As we all know, when you work for others, you must abide by their rules and business vision. This will not always align with your way of thinking. This could present a little bit of emotional and career struggles. So, you must keep a professional mindset. This means focusing on your goals, to gain positive as well as negative aspects of the business that will help you on your journey. When you focus on your goals and make your job a learning experience, your time spent will not feel wasted. It will become a stepping stone to boost your career. Learn as much as you can from not only the artistic side of the career but also the businesses aspect. Social skills are very important, so pay attention to all the little details. They could lead you to a surprisingly positive outcome.

We’d love to hear more about MissPilarBeauty.
I would like to say that I try to excel in the overall health of your hair, which I personalize for each and every client. Over the last four years, I have developed a variety of skills that include hair, makeup, photography, model preparations, social media, as well as running the business itself. My specialty is creating natural healthy and beautiful lived in hair color that needs low maintenance. I am known mainly for dimensional blondes, balayage, and vibrant fashion/Rusk hair color.

My clients love the relaxing therapeutic environment I provide for them.

Some of my dearest achievements include owning my own business, that grows on a daily basis. I have been a finalist for the License to Create Awards. Placing in the top ten for the best dimensional blonde category. I have an educational influence in the field of hair technique and color formulation. I have worked overseas for specific clients as well as learning from international hair artists in countries that include Germany, Ireland, Spain, and Mexico. Including nationwide.

What I am most proud of is the smile I get from clients when they see their reflection in the mirror.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel woman, as well as men, can achieve any career desired equally. Of course, either gender can have more pronounced skills in some specific fields than others. I think by saying what I think women would be particularly well positioned for, limits the dream of doing something maybe more than out of the norm. Women are able to adapt and conquer in all aspects of life. So, I think that makes us particularly well positioned for any and all opportunities that are out there. I think for either gender we are in a time where we can truly make our dreams come true. Small businesses are the foundation of a good economy and I encourage any of us to go after just that.
