Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Lujan.
Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always had an interest in skin care thanks to one of my sisters who went to Esthetics school when I was in high school. It had always been an interest of mine to attend Esthetics school and learn further but kept getting reminded by others that it may not be the best career move. After working countless jobs and attending college classes that didn’t spark passion, I decided to take the leap and enroll in school! I am glad I did because, from day one in Esthetics school, I was hooked! I loved learning everything about skincare and working in the student clinic. Fast forward to three months after having my first child, I started my own business and do not regret any decision I’ve made to get me here so far! When I signed my first lease in a studio space, I had no clientele or a business plan… YIKES! But posting on social media, the help of family and friends, and my drive to succeed I was able to build up a steady clientele within three months. It was just enough to pay my studio rent and supplies! I have put everything my business has made back into my spa to make it better and offer more services. I pour my soul into my spa, and give my clients my full knowledge in skincare to help them achieve results at a price everyone can afford!
Has it been a smooth road?
With starting my business and the anxiety that comes with being a one-person operation the struggle is real. Also, add in being a first-time mom and navigating through the waves of entrepreneurship. I have learned that I cannot say yes to everything. It is easy to get burnt out because you want to get everyone through the door. With that comes resentment, and not being able to give 100% to each client. It was a struggle to run the business side of it and the passion side of owning a business. I had to learn to ask for help. My husband is a naturally gifted savvy person. He helped me structure simple tasks I was too overwhelmed to figure out. My advice to women just starting their journey is to ASK FOR HELP and don’t be afraid to say “No” if it is adding too much to your plate.
We’d love to hear more about Nilla Skin Lash & Wax.
I am a Licensed Aesthetician! My passion is skin care and providing healing results through the power of natural ingredients. I specialize in skin care, facials, waxing, and eyelashes. All things beauty are my jam! I am very proud of my ability to provide a genuine experience to my clients and offer them an improvement in their skin concerns. I think that sets me apart then the larger commercial spas that just pump out clients and work their Aestheticians to the bone.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I feel like I get my Entrepreneurship qualities from my Abuelito Pedro. He from a very young age had the drive to succeed and owned a textile company, bodegas (convenience stores), ran a small farm, and managed/owned an apartment building in the Dominican Republic. I spent many summers there with my grandparents. I got to see how passionate my Abuelo was about his work, and how well he treated his employees. I knew I wanted something for myself but didn’t know exactly what it would be.
