Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Konzal.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I can remember, I have been dancing, performing, and creating. At five years old, I started gymnastics, when I was eight, my parents bought a video camera that I inevitably took over, and at age nine, I started at a local dance studio. Fast forward to college, I hadn’t taken a dance class in about five years. I was feeling lost, without passion, and had zero motivation. After taking a slew of classes that somewhat piqued my interest, nothing was “sticking.” After two years of no direction, I decided to take a dance class at school. Instantly, I felt alive, inspired, and like I was returning home to myself. I chose to continue down this path and opportunities kept presenting themselves. I found friends, I found work, I found my passion and I found my drive. Since then, I have graduated from Arizona State University with a BFA in dance and my choreographic and performance work has been seen in Arizona, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, and North Carolina. Currently, I teach dance (ballet, jazz, contemporary, creative movement) to students all over the Phoenix Valley of various ages, sizes, and backgrounds. Over the past two years, I have expanded into the world of fitness. I created a dance oriented workout called Dance N’Sculpt that combines cardio dance moves and targeted strength training for a low impact, effective, and oh-so-fun workout! I am hopeful and excited about the future and can’t wait to see where dance takes me next!
Has it been a smooth road?
Just keeping doing things. Keep chipping away at it. There are times where I feel I have reached a “lull” but I continue to show up and get the work done because something always comes up. Opportunities are always heading in your direction. Some opportunities come quick, others take their time to develop. You could work your butt off for 4 years straight and on the 5th year, become the biggest sensation. Don’t give up!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in teaching dance to all ages and abilities and I’m known for cultivating high energy, judgment-free, and positive classroom environment. I believe dance should be accessible to all ages and all body types.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother. She passed away when I was 15, but I am so thankful that I was raised by a strong woman. She taught me to be resilient, fight for what’s important, and to be myself – no matter what. My sister, who has been through hell and back and still keeps going. My friends are all total boss babes that inspire me with their brilliance and leadership. My “bonus mom” that has shown me that their is no limit to love. Lastly, because of my line of work, I am lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing women (of all ages) all of the time. I get to see women be leaders, inspire each other, and overcome struggle. Women are the best!
