Meet Trailblazer Mary Mounce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Mounce.

Mary, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first became interested in skin when I took a job in high school at a cosmetic counter at a local high-end department store. The European line I worked for had a more natural approach to skin health by using botanicals and essential oils. I immediately became obsessed with all things skincare. Then, shortly after graduating from high school, I developed really bad acne. At this time, I began seeing an Aesthetician and this was a game-changer! I totally loved my Aesthetician. She was elegant, beautiful, knowledgable, caring and successful. She was so inspiring as I found myself growing more interested in skin health. Regular facials at her spa turned into regular massages and I couldn’t get enough. Soon, I started dreaming about doing this as a career. I remember being 20 years old and daydreaming about converting an old, historic home into a wellness center. I still have the journal in which I wrote in detail of my dream “wellness spa”. Details included an apothecary to custom formulate skincare products, healing spa with massages & facials and a juice bar with herbal tonics. This was over 20 years ago.

Unfortunately, I put my dream on hold for many years while I pursued a “normal” career. However, I was never happy and would always come back to my vision. It wasn’t until after a significant life event that I made the decision to go after my dreams and I haven’t looked back.

Now, I am a Registered Nurse, Licensed Aesthetician & Massage Therapist and currently practice in my office part-time. I own Restoration Rx Holistic MedSpa that opened in Phoenix last year and just recently launched my own skincare lines under the brand “My Rx Skincare”. This was created by blending the complexity of science and wisdom nature with quality, researched ingredients for my clients and community. I currently have 4 skincare lines under this brand which all have a different approach to skin health.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been the most challenging, yet rewarding path I have ever pursued. I have had people in my life that I thought would support my dreams who actually push against it saying it wasn’t “practical”. I have also had some of the most amazing support from unlikely sources that makes me feel very blessed and grateful. Sometimes, I have second-guessed my business and dreams because of the challenges, but it is the clear vision of my goals that keeps me going. I have learned to remain humble and accept help when it is offered. I also learned that sometimes, you have to set boundaries for the people in your life that may hold you back, whether it’s intentional or not. I practice positive thinking daily and mindfulness meditation helps keep everything in perspective. I try and find the lessons in any set back and get up and try again… over and over. It’s a daily practice and sometimes it isn’t pretty. It’s the passion that keeps me fueled and my true desire to help others.

My business is driven by a “Holistic approach. Clinical results” philosophy. I like blending my clinical knowledge with my holistic background and delivering it through my services. I provide customized spa-type facials, massages, advanced skin care treatments and energy work. Skin & body renewal can be a complex equation that is unique to each client. My goal is to bring balance through restorative efforts.  I view my business as a relationship with my clients and I strive to maintain that throughout their journey; my clients are never just another “appointment”. While my office is located in N. Phoenix, the mobile part of my business has really taken off recently with people gathering and hosting Spa Parties. I find these are a great way to bring groups together for relaxation, connecting and of course FUN! I can create a unique service menu based on the needs of the group including spa facials, relaxing massages, advanced skin care services or chair massages.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I am always reading motivational books or listening to motivational speakers. It helps me stay focused and keep a successful mindset. I love listening to Tony Robbins, Earl Nightingale, Zig Ziglar, Wayne Dyer and Robin Sharma to name a few.
