Today we’d like to introduce you to Louise McEwen.
Louise, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am so fortunate that I knew which career was the best for me at a very young age, like seven years old, young!! Even though life had a few twists and turns in store for me, I graduated beauty school almost 17 years ago! As I was building my clientele and trying to find a good fit in a salon, I decided to go to college for business. I always wanted my own salon! The puzzle started to come together. I found a salon filled with wonderful stylists and the clients were flowing in. At this time, my two boys were five and seven years old. My schedule was full to state it lightly. I was taking classes full time so I could complete my AA in two years, working just under 40 hours in the salon and parenting my little ones! Hindsight, I can’t believe we made it through all that, but we did! A couple of years went on and I became self-employed in 2004. This was a scary step for me, yet I am so grateful I had the people supporting (pushing me) to take that step! That decision has allowed me to raise my boys, attend 98% of their activities, and support them into adulthood. Not to mention, the countless clients that have touched my life in so many ways and develop meaningful relationships along the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’m not sure I would say a smooth road, but that is all part of the journey. Running a business is full of decisions, some are easier than others. Each of them develops you and your business though, so stay focused on your vision and be prepared to make adjustments. Those adjustments are sometimes for your business and sometimes for your personal life. Either way, keep moving forward, perseverance can make your dreams come true!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an individual hair stylist, in a private studio to put it simply. But really, I am an artist! I am known for the updos I create for my clients and on myself. I believe in finding and building your hairstyle from what makes you unique. I am a firm believer in having the healthiest hair possible while achieving all your coloring and cutting desires. I also strive for variety as we transform your hair from one color to another.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so –who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
I have encompassed countless mentors throughout this journey. My best advice would be to spread your kindness while remaining open to all walks of life. I have found priceless lessons, wonderful inspiration, and beautiful relationships during this journey. I also believe in continuing to learn and grow in your personal life as well as professionally.
