Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Cook.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started cosmetology school in Ogden, Utah, in July 2016. I immediately fell in love with the color and knew that I was a hairdresser at heart. I graduated in August 2017 and immediately began working at a small local salon. I grew quickly and managed to build a solid clientele in less than eight months. In April 2018, I took a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona and I immediately fell in love with the city. In May, I packed up my entire home and moved. I started over and was uncertain of my future. In July 2018, I took a job as an assistant for Jay Wesley Olson, owner of the bespoke salon and original member of PulpRiot. I worked for Mr. Olson until November of 2018. In late November, I accepted a position as a booth renter at the Cali&Co beauty lounge, in Northern Scottsdale. This was my first jump into building clientele – and I have been busy and successful since. Hard work, determination and passion have led me to be recognized on many platforms (modern salon, Allure magazine, behind the chair, American salon, pulp riot, etc.). In February of 2019, I was accepted into the riot squad, becoming a brand ambassador and public indie educator for the brand. I currently work in Cali&co and taking new clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To say it has been smooth would be a lie. From 2016 to 2019, I experienced extreme poverty, divorce, becoming victim to drug abuse from a partner, losing jobs, relocating, fear, hopelessness, uncertainty, excitement, new love, determination, and hustle. All you can do in times of uncertainty is realize that these are not unclimbable mountains – these are milestones to teach you how powerful you are. To appreciate the success I had now, I had to go through these things. Tragedy always feels like the end of the road, when in reality it is just the beginning. You always have the decision to let things make you or break you. It wasn’t until I harnessed my fears, that I was able to prove to myself how truly powerful I really am.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Coloredbyliz – what should we know?
I am a licensed cosmetologist, specializing in color- particularly vivid colors and balayage techniques. I like to call myself an unconventional hair colorist. I bring color to life in my clients thru personality, allowing the client to truly express themselves through their hair. My colors are often vibrant, shiny, and one of a kind. I’m mostly known for my redheads – my copper and red tones. I use PulpRiot hair color, which brings out the depth, vibrancy and shine in my colors.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
It is incredibly important to have multiple mentors as a hairstylist. Being up to date on trends and education is very important in our ever-changing industry. Taking some time to be an assistant to a successful stylist was a huge plus for me.
