Meet Trailblazer Kemi Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemi Hill.

Kemi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Cosmetology wasn’t something I grew up knowing I wanted to get into. When I was pregnant with my 1st daughter at 20 years old, a friend of mine mentioned we should attend cosmo school. Mind you, I was in school getting ready to apply for a nursing program but I decided to check it out anyway. I love meeting new people and being creative with my hands so it was a good fit. I knew entering into the beauty industry would allow me the flexibility for my future family so I was interested. Many people close to me didn’t think it was a real career but that drove me, even more, to prove them wrong. I’ve learned so much over the past 12 years that has shaped me into the stylist I am today. I literally started from the bottom and I continue to learn and grow my business today. Married and three kids later, I now work a schedule I choose and I am building a strong business foundation with employees.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh my gosh, no. there were many many challenges and I still face them today. Entrepreneurship is a roller coaster of emotions and there are challenges when growing a business. Problem-solving will always be a constant thing. My hardest struggle is not being a “workaholic”! When you have a business you are passionate about, it’s very hard to turn off the business mode. It can easily creep its way into time that should be reserved for your personal life. Don’t allow the business to fully consume you, self-care is extremely important to reaching success.

My salon specializes in healthy hair care! Our menu is small because we choose to focus and sharpen our skills to become experts on our services. We are also known for our professionalism and salon ambiance where we service women only. Many of our clients are business women so we make the space easy for them to work out of while providing the best service we can. I created a salon atmosphere that is authentic and a place where staff and clients love being in. The vibes are very positive and clients leave not only looking good but feeling good.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Find a MENTOR! This is a huge advantage and many successful people have had a mentor at one point or another. A mentor will give you advice on important decisions and guide you in the right direction. This helps to avoid possible mistakes that will save you time and money in the long run. Never be too prideful to ask for help, be open, willing to learn and always look for the lessons in each experience. Your word is everything and always work in excellence!
