Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Brusch.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in raised in California and the oldest of three children. From a young age, I knew two truths: My purpose in life was to help others and that I was born to be an entrepreneur. I launched a series of small businesses as a child ranging from lemonade stands to babysitter clubs, to a neighborhood newspaper! I saved my earnings for years and eventually bought my very own plane ticket Italy by the time I was in 8th grade. From that point forward, I got a travel bug (that I have yet to scratch) and a zest for working hard in the name of service to others.
I went to university to study psychology and went on to get a masters degree in counseling. I have applied my degree in all kinds of ways (counseling foster youth, career + academic counseling at a university, and recruiting/hiring), but it wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I truly came to understand how to apply my degree in a way that both helps others and applies the creativity and freedom that entrepreneurship can bring.
After the birth of my two children and a very challenging postpartum with my second daughter, I found myself in a period of deep self-exploration and was surprised to find myself in the middle of a spiritual awakening. With a fresh perspective based on introspection and trust, I began to realize my life was a bit off track. While I had accomplished a lot on the outside (big house, flexible and high paying job, the husband, two kids, vacations, friends, etc.), I had lost a connection with myself and forgot how to prioritize my needs and desires. This is super common in motherhood, especially early motherhood.
I began to study the state of motherhood and specifically, postpartum, and how these roles intersect with other pressures women face in modern parenting. I saw mothers suffering from mom guilt, perfectionism, anxiety, and worse. It became clear how to apply my counseling degree and drive for entrepreneurship and I founded my company, Mamaste, where I provide coaching to mothers through their postpartum and beyond.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is never a smooth road, and that is what keeps it interesting! It is in those bumpy moments that we learn our most important lessons and they help us get back on track to where we are going.
One of my biggest struggles was the birth of my second child. Up until that point, I felt very in control of my life and choices and my daughter showed me otherwise! This was a healthy and important lesson for me (I am a type-A Capricorn with perfectionist tendencies) which ultimately led me to deep introspection and growth. Without this experience, I would have never founded Mamaste!
Another challenge I face (ongoing), as does any entrepreneur, is how to keep your company alive and known! There are so many people leaving the traditional workforce to take a stab at their own venture, which means the market is saturated (especially in the coaching space). The way I overcome this is to remember to be authentic to who I am and trust that the right clients will find me, as long as I am truly myself. This requires me to keep up on my personal healing practices, which have become a non-negotiable in my life. For me this shows up as daily meditation, regular yoga, keeping a gratitude journal, and regular “dates” with myself to check-in and keep doing the work to be my most authentic and highest self.
My advice to anyone is to get super clear on who you are and how you want to be of service in this world. It is challenging to sift through what we have been conditioned to think/feel by society and our upbringing, however, your true self is there and waiting. I encourage everyone to find rituals that help them reconnect with their true essence which allows each of us to show up to the world as the best version of ourselves. This is particularly important for new mothers, who logistically have to give over so much of themselves to their families. Remembering that you are a person with needs and dreams and there is room for YOU in your family will bring you more joy than you can imagine.
We’d love to hear more about Mamaste.
Mamaste was created to support mothers through postpartum and beyond. My coaching packages are designed to support mothers through traditionally challenging times in motherhood. They are also efficient, affordable, and super practical as most mothers are busy and on a budget!
My programs work well for women who are looking to release people-pleasing and perfectionism, want to learn how to reconnect with their intuition, and who are anti-supermom syndrome (I am a believer that less is MORE).
I have three coaching programs, all are one-time, 90-minute sessions over Zoom video and followed up by 30 days of email support.
– Postpartum planning session: perfect for the expecting mother in her second or third trimester. She will walk away with a tangible personalized plan for how to recover, heal, and bond with her baby during the first 40 days after giving birth. This includes important foods (and recipes) to eat when recovering from childbirth, how to ask for help from friends and family, setting boundaries about visitors, what to expect with sleeping and feeding schedules and how to set up the home to best support her goals, and discussion topics to have with her partner before the baby arrives to facilitate a smoother transition.
– Returning to work after maternity leave: created for the mother who is preparing to return to work and wants to set herself up for success upon return. Clients will walk away with a tangible personalized plan which includes expectations and boundaries to establish with their employer and childcare provider, tips for how to successfully feed her baby when she is away (whether she is nursing, pumping, formula feeding or a combination), and suggested discussion questions to reflect upon with her partner before returning to work to help with an equal division of labor on the home/family front.
Balancing Session for working moms: designed for the working mom who is feeling stretched thin and unsure how to fit in a sense of self into an already jammed packed schedule. During this session, clients will define new rituals for self-care that are realistic to apply in their daily lives, steps for how to overcome the guilt commonly felt amongst working moms, reflection prompts to be used in journaling/meditation to stay on track, and personalized recommendations on where they could use more support.
3 Month Coaching program: I do offer an in-depth coaching program for mothers who are looking to dive deeper into their personal transformation and want more accountability and support. Spaces are limited for this level of coaching. Please contact me directly to check on availability.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
If you are an entrepreneur or aspiring to be one, I highly recommend joining a coworking space! There are several coworking spaces throughout the valley that I would highly recommend and are very female-friendly. I found my happy space at Thrive Coworking for Women based in downtown Gilbert. Not only is the space gorgeous and inspiring to work out of, but the community of women is inspiring and approachable. Everyone is looking to help each other out and has a lot of fun together. When you work out of coworking space, there are natural opportunities to network or meet potential mentors who can inspire you.
