Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hubbell.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Arizona has always been home for my family and me, but California called our names. So, we moved to the Bay Area for three years, where my husband attended Chiropratic school. On weekends, we took road trips to new places. I had just purchased my first DSLR camera from Costco, (a Canon Rebel Ti3 with kit lens) and started documenting our trips. I would post my photos on social media to showcase our latest adventure. Soon, I got a request to photograph an engagement session. Becca and Josh were my very first clients. They were young and so much in love. They were so easy going and I had no idea what I was doing, but we had so much fun! Soon after the session, I knew that’s what I wanted to shoot. It renewed my soul. I now specialize in engagements, weddings, and anniversaries.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not a technical person, so learning to shoot in manual mode, was one of my biggest challenges. I spent countless hours reading my camera manual, photography blogs and watching YouTube tutorials. My advice, invest in a mentor. They will get you where you want to be so much faster than on your own. You can skip all the frustration and save so much time. PS-In case you’re wondering I do offer mentor sessions!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jennifer Hubbell Photography – what should we know?
Learning about yourself while on a creative journey is so eye-opening. Once you stop looking at other’s people’s work that’s when you find out so much about yourself. I learned that I’m a romantic person. I always thought of myself as mean and tough. But no, I totally melt couples hold hands, laugh and dance with one another. That’s what I love to capture in my photographs. My images are bright, happy and for the most part are in the moment. I’ve learned to become an awesome director. I’m very verbal with my clients and that helps them feel at ease. I also learned that I have a calm vibe, especially on busy wedding days! Who knew, because I always thought I was loud and brazen. Maybe only after my third glass of wine. Haha! Seriously, though, I have followers who often tell me that my IG grid is so peaceful and serene that when they need to relax they simply visit my IG account. So cool!
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was a pretty bold child. I used to walk off on my own to the corner store and random customers would buy me popsicles, I was maybe two or three years old (I can hear my parents right now, “It happen only ONE time Jenny!”) Haha! I also ran away from boarding school… multiple times. But, I always got caught! My cousins and I would take the horses out for a ride all the time without permission. And this one time, I almost burn down my Grandma’s shade house, because I wanted simply wanted to roll my own cigarettes and smoke ’em. I was trying to imitate my Grandpa. Haha! I’m still bold today. I’m always leaping without looking. As adults, we tend to be a little too cautious and overthink things too much. Just let go and have fun!
