Meet Trailblazer Jennifer Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Flores.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I first started getting into lashing, I was working a boring cubicle job in Corporate America and I was feeling very unfulfilled. I knew there had to be more to life than your typical 8-5 grind in an office, so I decided to take a leap of faith and invest in a private training course with a local lash artist who, at the time was doing my lash extensions and who is now a mentor. I loved lash extensions right away and would lash friends and family on evenings and weekends, However, word of mouth spread and I started getting calls from the general public and felt uncomfortable having them come to my home for lashes. So, I decided that it would be worth investing in school and getting licensed so that I could run my own studio. I attended an esthetics program at Avalon School of Cosmetology and 6 months later, I graduated and went on to pass The Arizona State Boards and the rest is history…

Has it been a smooth road?
Attending school and starting my own business has not been an easy road. There is fear, doubt, financial strains, etc. I’d love to say that this goes away, however, I’ve been at it for 3 years and it really never does. My advice for other women starting their journey is that small business is not for the faint of heart. There WILL be fear, doubt, and financial strains. You WILL be working long hours, odd hours and you may not have much of a social life at times because everything revolves around your business. However, my small business has brought me so much fulfillment and joy. I go to my studio with a smile on my face and I still can’t believe I get paid to do what I love. It’s the best feeling in the world to be completely in control of your destiny. It’s enlightening, liberating and a very special place in life to be. So, my advice for women just starting out in the business is to sit tight, It may all feel like a huge struggle at first but you must keep going. It takes great, big, heart to break from the “norm” and call the shots and live life on your own terms but once you learn the ropes it’ll be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. I would also advise being an advocate for other women in the field. Seek out mentors in your industry, network, connect at all levels and just be open, honest and kind but also take no shit. Leave the nastiness, backstabbing, and negativity to the haters.

We’d love to hear more about Boss Babe Beauty Bar.
I consider myself a one-stop shop for the glamourista on the glow! I specialize in EVERYTHING. I am licensed to do really amazing things in my industry and I take full advantage of my licensure. I HATE being pigeon hold. I offer permanent makeup, lash extensions, microneedling, chemical peels, spa facials, LED Light therapy the list goes on and on. If my license covers it I offer it at my studio. I am most proud of my permanent makeup work. Tattooing faces have been one of the most challenging arts to learn and I feel truly proud to have learned from some of the most talented women in the industry. I’d like to think what sets me apart from others is my care and concern for my clients. I mean, let’s get real, I’m running a small business and sure at the end of the day I’d love to make a profit. However, I treat people how I would like to be treated. The mantra in our industry is DO.NO.HARM and I take that responsibility very seriously. I use everything in my studio. I test everything on myself first and if I don’t like it, I don’t offer it. It’s hard enough to be a woman nowadays with everyone trying to sell you something but I stand by my services and the products I use because I USE THEM. I’ve seen the results and therefore I will gladly offer them to other women.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Make sure it is something you really, truly, feel passionate about and enjoy. The one regret that I have is that I did not do this sooner. As young girls, we’re taught to just blindly march to the beat of the drum and we try to fulfill others expectations of us. But does that make you happy? Do you feel fulfilled by what you are learning, investing time in and can you truly see yourself doing what you’re doing longterm and being happy down the road? Life is what YOU make of it. Do not let anyone ever tell you, you can’t do it. You CAN do it. Love yourself, invest in yourself, find something you are passionate about and just DO IT. No Fear.
