Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Reidhead.
Hailey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started loving the beauty industry in 5th grade when I would get makeup magazines from the library at school. It wasn’t until I went to Africa at age 13, that I realized I wanted to make girls feel good about themselves and that it would be a part of my future. There was an African girl that I met who was sick in the hospital and I told her “You look so beautiful!” Her face lit up and she smiled so big! This sparked a fire in me and as I attended Utah State years later, I was sitting in a class and remembered, I need to be doing what I love! So, I left college, went to beauty school at Penrose Academy and now, I do hair and makeup so I can make girls feel confident every day.
Has it been a smooth road?
If someone wants to start a new career/business they have to know that the beginning is never a breeze. You have to start somewhere and I feel like it was hard for me to not be the “best” at something or struggle with new concepts. A good business doesn’t build itself overnight; it takes time and I am still learning new things and becoming better in my skills. I would tell beginners to first, be patient with yourself because you’re learning something completely new! And second, don’t expect things to happen with no work, you have to put in the effort and practice. Every step of the way can be exciting if you have a positive attitude!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do hair and makeup six days a week! I especially love doing wedding hair and makeup. I am also working at Jess Salon with a super talented girl who’s been teaching me so much about hair color and extensions. I am most proud of how far I’ve come in a short amount of time! It’s been a year since I started beauty school and I’ve been done for five months. I actually got asked to do makeup for a movie coming up which is awesome!
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My parents always taught me to work hard. They could’ve given me money to buy a car, clothes, etc but they made me work for it. I would clean people’s houses and babysit starting at 12, and then got a job at 15 and paid for all my things. They also taught me to share what we make with others who need it more and that was a very valuable lesson to me.
