Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. G. Martha Crespo-Jiménez, DC.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Having the privilege of being raised in a “vacation island”, I love everything about a small town feeling because it gave me the opportunity to create a sense of connection with my environment and the community.
My desire to become a chiropractor raised when I was in college studying Elementary Education. I went to a chiropractor by the recommendations of my yoga instructor and that’s when everything started. I completed my degree in Elementary Education, hence my passion for teaching others. Then, I started a degree in Occupational Therapy until life finally showed me the way to go to Chiropractic school and I decided to move to Marietta, Georgia for a Degree of Doctor of Chiropractic at Life University, where I graduated in 2017.
Fast forward in time, Arizona called me! Here I am, serving the community of this spectacular place. I really believe that I was meant to serve this community. The desert has something magical about it and the people here are a reflection of this. My intention in Phoenix is to share with people what is it about small towns that makes them so inspiring and fulfilling. That’s why Health Expression Family Chiropractic was created to serve the community in a way that connects people with their own potential to express health in a warm and open-minded environment, even when we are in the middle of such a big and fast paced city. I like to call it a safe haven for health expression!
Another aspect that I discovered while in school was my passion for what I believe is the maximal expression of life: pregnancy and birth. This is why I became certified in the Webster Technique by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) to safely and gently adjust pregnant women. Chiropractic care in pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby throughout pregnancy and birth and I am very passionate about mamas to be.
I am also very passionate about kiddos and seeing them living the best childhood they can live. That is why I devote all my attention to making them and their mothers feel comfortable with chiropractic care so that they can also express their better health and share it as a family.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been an easy road but I believe that every project isn’t easy because we were not born knowing how to do it all. So basically I find that projects like this are a learning curve where you have ups and downs and where you learn from every step you take. I know that it might sound cliché to say it this way, but for me, it’s a reality. It always amazes me that while I was still in Georgia, I really didn’t feel ready to start my own practice and it wasn’t until I visited Arizona that I knew that this was the place to open my practice. Again, there’s something about Arizona that I can’t explain with words! It was definitely challenging having all these ideas in my mind and not being able to produce them, for reasons that go beyond my understanding. When we moved to Arizona, I remember visiting Puerto Rico at some point right after when moved here, and on my way back to Arizona, still at the airport, it all became clear. I declared that my practice was going to be born. Then, the name, what name should I use, then the logo, which one represents me, and all the other decisions that you need to make when opening a practice. After long days and nights, Health Expression Family Chiropractic became a reality and I treat it like my baby, that I devote all my attention and love.
I would tell every woman that we are living in an era where social media is without any doubts, a powerful tool to gain access to millions of people and that we must use it wisely. And that you WILL know when is the right time and the right space, and WHAT is the right way of growing your projects. Trusting your most deep feelings is going to be your best instrument. We have this unique power of knowing what and when is right, and we just need to quiet the mind and allow our body to talk to us and listen. Trust. There will be times when you trust and it doesn’t work as you would want but believe, there is a reason for that and it will guide you through other ways and will help you grow in ways you wouldn’t imagine.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work with everyone from age zero and beyond. Chiropractic is the medium for optimizing the body’s potential to heal and thrive. Chiropractic adjustments remove interferences in the nervous system to allow the body to function to its best potential. For that reason, everyone will benefit from Chiropractic care.
I like to set myself apart in that I thrive to provide a space where people can be themselves and heal at their own pace and where they can unwind and express health through chiropractic. Also, because I know we all have different thresholds, I provide gentle, precise and effective chiropractic adjustments that go in accordance with everybody’s needs. With a firm but gentle touch, I allow the body to heal in its own way. Also, I believe in the importance of seeing everyone as a person and not as a number, because this is the way I like to be treated and because this allows for a healthy relationship and a community sense within the practice. I like to work with people as a team, listening to what they have to say and what is important for them in terms of health in order to set realistic health goals.
Like I mentioned before, I’m a Webster Technique Certified Chiropractor. By definition, the Webster Technique is “a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/ SI joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.” This means that chiropractic adjustments will help promote proper alignment in your body, which will create an optimal environment for a more comfortable and healthy pregnancy.
Another area that I love to work with is the pediatric population. Even before coming to this world, babies are affected, positively and negatively, by everything that happens while in the womb. Chiropractic care helps children reach their potentials by promoting healthy development. Keeping your kid’s spine aligned helps the communication between the spinal cord and the brain to stay free of interruptions, therefore, allowing them to enjoy healthy development.
Lastly, because I speak Spanish, I have it set as my mission to provide chiropractic care to those who need it, without leaving anyone behind because of a language barrier. For that reason, it gives me tremendous joy to serve our Spanish-speaking population in Phoenix and nearby areas.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
As I mentioned before, social media has been a huge tool for promoting and growing my practice. Also, connecting with people in the community with an honest desire to share experiences and knowledge has been another great tool to grow my practice. I encourage everyone to work together as a team; I encourage all health care professionals and wellness entrepreneurs to join forces because if we work together, we reach more people and become stronger.
