Meet Trailblazer Denise Aubrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Aubrey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was raised in a family that owned a residential construction business. Being around homes during all stages of construction has always been a part of me. I’ve worked with contractors since I was 16 so I feel totally comfortable on a job site. As I got older, I began to dabble in design, and as we bought and sold a few homes, I really started to discover that I loved design, and I had a natural eye for it. Raising a family of four took me down a different path for a few years but now that my family is almost raised, I’ve gotten fully involved in creating my own design team and pursuing something I love to do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s no growth on a smooth road, and I’ve experienced a lot of growth. Figuring things out is a challenge but it can be fun too. The biggest challenge that I deal with is the “business” side of design. I can create design boards and ideas all day long, but fine-tuning the numbers and balancing schedules presents a challenge. My key is to not get discouraged and I do that by remembering it’s about the journey, not the destination.

If you are just starting out, remember that life is about having experiences that shape us into being smart, strong women. There are plenty of times that you can doubt yourself, but perseverance pays off when you see something you have created come to life.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Denise Aubrey Design – what should we know?
I am a full-service designer, meaning I can work with a client from consultation, through creation, and finally enjoyment of a completed project. I primarily design for residential clients but have found a lot of joy in taking professional offices from the mundane to the amazing. There’s no reason the workplace shouldn’t feel as comfortable as home. My design style focuses on creating clean, minimal, modern spaces that are both comfortable and practical. I don’t believe in including design elements that a client will never use, just because it’s what is “in” at the moment; great design should stand the test of time.

Our design team had a chance to work on our dream project last year in La Jolla, California as a lover of all things beach, I like to get away to Southern California as often as I can. This was a large scale remodel of the incredible property. Wanting to connect the home to its beachside setting, we were challenged to find furniture and accessories that seamlessly fit into a luxury home, but gave off the relaxed vibe of coastal living. Months of work paid off as we guided the extremely satisfied owners through the completed home. Sitting on the 4th-floor balcony watching the sunset was the perfect way to close out this experience.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women have so much to offer, especially because of our creativity and focus on details. Not to say we don’t see the big picture, but being able to identify the minutiae allows women to steer around a lot of unseen obstacles.
