Meet Trailblazer Cynthia Hickey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Hickey.

Cynthia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been making up stories since I was a child, but my first cozy mystery, Fudge-Laced Felonies, was published by Barbour Publishing in 2007. That was followed by three more, then a series of historical romances with Harlequin, now, I own my own small publishing company and write under its imprint. We have a hundred authors writing everything from inspirational to thriller. While the company publishes most genres, I’ve focused my writing on cozy mysteries and suspense. My newest series, Hollywood Murders started releasing this year. The first book, Killer Pose, features a wannabe crime reporter turned reluctant actor.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been particularly hard for me. I got my first agent by winning a contest, then she sold the book. A few years later, I acquired another agent but mostly write through my own press, doing the occasional novella for Barbour Publishing. My advice: never give up. Never assume there is only one path of publishing for you to take. There are many, many ways to have your story told.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Winged Publications – what should we know?
In regards to my publishing company, what I’m most proud of is that we are all one big family. We help each plot, market, lift each other up in times of need, and pray for each other. I answer every question posed to me in a timely manner. We repackage books into sets, plan new boxed sets…I keep my authors as busy as they want to be.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Learn the craft. Just because you can self-publish, doesn’t mean you should.
