Today we’d like to introduce you to Bettie von Sweetz.
Bettie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Next month will be 13 years that I’ve been designing aprons. My designs have evolved over the years. When I first started, it was more about learning how to sew and as the years passed it became more about creating my own unique designs. Everything that I create now comes directly from my own vision and mind. From my own patterns and design concepts. When I think about “aprons,” I don’t just think about “aprons.” I look at them as an extension of a glamorous woman’s wardrobe. Therefore, they should be just as beautiful as the clothing in her closet and who says aprons are limited to just the kitchen? I use my aprons to craft or even try on heels. I have so many ideas when it comes to aprons that I dream about it every day. I can’t wait to see where this long-life dream of mine takes me in the next 13 years.
So thankful for the people that surround and support my dream every day of my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly has not been an easy journey. I am a very small business with limited funds and I personally sew and design each piece. I personally have learned to manage every aspect of my business from creating my website to marketing. It is a constant uphill battle to try and compete with large brands because my items are priced to reflect all the handwork that is put into each piece.
My advice for a struggling entrepreneur is to never lose your sense of hope and faith. Even when things don’t pan out as you planned. If you keep trying, you will eventually reach your goal and it will be that much sweeter because of all the love, sweat, and sacrifice you put into getting there. At least that is what I constantly tell myself.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I like to stay that I design “Glamour Aprons” because they are so unique. My aprons sometimes get confused for dresses because they are so elaborate. That could be because when I design aprons I don’t just think of aprons. I like to look at aprons as an extension of a glamorous woman’s wardrobe and therefore they should be as beautiful as the wardrobe they are becoming a part of.
I’ve also been told that they are to pretty to cook in but I beg to differ. A woman should always feel glamorous and beautiful in any article in her wardrobe and you should never be afraid to wear something. After all, you only have one life and you might as well look cute and wear what you wish… when you wish ~ßettie von Sweetz.
When I design, I love to pull inspiration from my glamour icons like Dita von Teese, Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page and modern pinups like Rachel Ann Jensen and Miss Betty Doll.
I have been lucky enough to design and have my work featured by some of the most beautiful women.
Also, I have been fortunate enough to have a brand like Stop Staring! clothing carry my aprons in their boutique.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice would be to learn as much as you can of the industry and try to network within that field to further your goals. If you align yourself with the right group of individuals, you can accomplish anything.
