Meet Trailblazer Aspen Day-Flynn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aspen Day-Flynn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It’s kind of an interesting story. I feel like most people always have a pretty solid idea of what their career goals are. As for me, I was always jumping around with different ideas. I was always wanting to study animals, being in the medical field, to wanting to be some sort of artist (specifically a tattoo artist). What started the spark of wanting to be hairstylist was working on a film I starred in, in Seattle, WA. My uncle, who lives there, was writing and directing an independent film and asked if I was interested in playing the main role in it. I was 15 at the time, so you can imagine how excited I was for such a job. It was so much fun and exciting but definitely a lot of work. Being behind the scenes was actually my favorite part of the whole experience. Watching the hairstylists and makeup artists were absolutely amazing to me. Seeing their creative work, being who they wanted to be, and doing really well with having such an artistic work environment was so inspiring for me. Having a job like that was for me.

After several months went by, I finished up my high school career and starting looking into beauty schools. I loved the idea of having artistic and creative freedom but also being independent and having flexibility. Finally, discovering something that I was really excited to do really fueled my ambition. I went to my closest local beauty school and signed up right away. I finished within a year at 18 years old and because I wanted to expand my education from school, I worked at a couple different salons within a 3 year span, as a hair assistant and stylist to learn as much as I could through their education programs. After getting great education, it was time to move on to a salon that was more about creative expression and more fitting for who I am. It took blood sweat and tears but I don’t regret the path I took, I love where I landed at Arcane Hair Parlour and love what I do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s definitely been a rollercoaster. Just like life has its ups and downs. Working in any artistic or independent industry is never easy, but I feel like all the best things aren’t easy to achieve. You have to sell yourself or your product and make it clear on why you’re the best choice, which I think is one of the hardest things to do. Building a stable clientele is definitely difficult, but having that patience along with putting in the hard work will get you where you want to be. You have to be hungry and passionate about what your goals are. Start small and grow. You are the ONLY person who can stop you from doing anything you want to do. Do not let yourself stand in your way. I know it sounds cliché but honestly, do not give up. Never give up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I am a professional hairstylist that absolutely loves and specializes in color of all kinds. From vivids, pastels, creative colors to soft, subtle, blonde balayages. I love to have color that has a very soft blended look that really packs a punch. I am very proud that I can be the person that gives other people their own self-expression. Every single person that walks in and sits in my chair has their own custom mix of whatever creation we have made for them. That means a lot to me. Even though everyone is so different with colors and tones, I really feel like I’ve created my signature style that is my own. That being said, I have so much fun with haircutting! Textured, fun, lived-in, messy is fun examples of the cutting style I really enjoy. I sometimes joke and call the appointment a therapy session because it’s a safe and relaxing environment for people to just enjoy the moment and leave feeling like they can take on the world with their fresh hair.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Firstly, the most important thing when it comes to your career is to love it. Like any job, there are going to be good and bad days, but when you are passionate about whatever it is that you do, it’s all worth it. Don’t let anyone stop you or get in your way. Always do what’s best for you. Life is too short, go for it. Making big decisions is always scary, but getting out of your comfort zone is what’s going to get you there, your goals. My last piece of advice would be education. No matter what it is you do, you can always be learning more and furthering your career. There isn’t one person that can’t always improve. There isn’t one person that knows everything. You can always be better and learn more, no matter how long you’ve been in your career. Education is so important in every single field.
