Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Staley.
Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started in the beauty industry very young as my mother has been a hairdresser for many years. I grew up watching her perform services for friends and family. I knew I always wanted to walk in her footsteps.
I got my license after attending college in Sacramento, California. After attending the Paul Mitchell School, I got a job with Ulta Beauty and was with the company for five years.
After working for a corporation, I knew I wanted to build something for myself. I opened Hair Envy Salon In November of 2017 and have been self-employed ever since. It was the best decision I ever made for myself.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Having the idea of being self-employed seems so foreign to some people but I believe that follow-through is the hardest part of getting started. Getting the proper salon licensing, insurance and finding a location, all have a hurdle that seems insurmountable. The best advice I could give someone starting out would be to do your homework (on licenses and insurance), map out a budget & reach out to other business owners in your niche. People who have owned businesses for a substantial amount of time have the best advice and the best way to work around a certain situation that might arise during the process.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair Envy Salon – what should we know?
As a stylist, I offer a wide variety of services. My work is mainly focused on blonding and 90% of my clients are color clients. I do a lot of balayage, highlighting, color retouches and color corrections.
My proudest moment is when I see the smile on my client’s faces and they say they love what I have done for them. That brings me the most joy.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that most of my clientele is referral based. I don’t do advertising. All new clients are usually friends or family of someone’s hair I have been doing for years. That’s an amazing achievement for me.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are particularly well positioned for any career they set out to do. It should not matter. If you have the skill, the know-how, and the drive, there’s no hurdle a woman or a man can’t achieve.
