Meet Trailblazer Amanda Zunck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Zunck.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I founded Amanda Victoria Beauty nine years ago in Oregon. My vision for the company is that “Amanda Victoria Beauty believes that all women are beautiful”. We have the Song of Solomon 4:7 verse as a core value for the company. It reads, “You are all together beautiful my darling, there is no flaw in you”. It is our honor to bring out each unique and individual quality from our clients in our artistry.

Amanda Victoria Beauty started as a weekend hobby as college girlfriends began getting married. I had done makeup for several years for events, family, and friends. After I gradated from college in education, I decided to peruse the makeup industry professionally. For nine years, I was a teacher during the week and did weddings and events on the weekends.

I moved from Oregon to Arizona in 2013 chasing some much-needed sunshine and took a kindergarten teaching position in the far west valley. I flew back to Oregon that first weekend for thirteen weekends in a row to finish out the summer weddings I had already booked. In 2017 after nine years in education, I decided to stop teaching and pursue my massively growing company. I completed my master’s degree at the beginning of 2018, in leadership and administration. I believe in lifelong learning and plan to continue to complete studies in the business field. Although I love teaching and after almost a decade in education, I have found that I find so much joy in developing and growing my business.

We have done hundreds of weddings, events, proms, and photo shoots. Amanda Victoria Beauty is the current sponsor for the Miss Arizona Organization and has the opportunity to meet so many incredible and empowering women. We hold classes and workshops on hair and makeup techniques. We enjoy working with youth and teaching the foundations of beauty. I believe that true beauty comes from within, and makeup and hair is a fun outer way to express that inner beauty. We teach this concept to young women who are growing up with social media and beauty influencers are at their fingertips.

I have hired fourteen artists, and two administrative assistants and still have the ability to educate my artists in our specific field. I often have to stop and remind myself that this is my career. I love what I do so much that it never feels like work. I always encourage others to search for their passion and follow their dream. Once that passion is found, and the dreams are being chased, work will never feel like work. Dreaming combined with dedication is a powerful combination.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In today’s society, we often want to see immediate results, instant growth, and prompt success. When I started my company, I booked two weddings the first year and I was beyond ecstatic. I absolutely loved doing hair and makeup, but to book two weddings that the first year was so exciting. I remember thinking, “Wow, I can get paid to do something I love?! This is amazing.”

For several years, I was the only person in my company. I responded to all of the inquiries that came in, kept inventory on my wedding kits and supplies, and managed the business side of things. For that first year, my marketing was just word of mouth, and I was shocked to see how quickly Amanda Victoria Beauty began to grow. It was then that I knew I needed help.

Throughout the years, we have learned so much. We have changed procedures, and processes as the company have expanded. It has been such an exciting process. When I hire the amazing people that work for Amanda Victoria Beauty, I care about their moral compass and hire people that embody kindness.

My biggest snippet of advice for new business owners is to focus on a steady growth rather than an exponential growth. If a business grows too quickly, I believe that structure and quality can be compromised. Never waver on the quality of your work. Your business will grow, give it time. Focus on quality and structure and everything else will fall into place.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amanda Victoria Beauty – what should we know?
Amanda Victoria Beauty (AVB) primarily focuses on providing hair and makeup services for weddings, and events.

AVB has a team of 13 incredible artists and is always looking to expand our team. We are the hair and makeup sponsors for the Miss Arizona Pageant. We work with women within that organization as they are promoting their platform and raising money for some incredible causes. It is our honor to provide hair and makeup for such a great organization.

We travel statewide for weddings and events and have traveled to several states outside of Arizona. In 2019, we plan to offer wedding services in other countries that are popular wedding destinations.

As a brand, I am most proud of my artists, and the culture we have created. We have so many glowing reviews, and that has made me so incredibly proud. I love seeing clients leave us reviews that we were such an incredible part of their wedding, and they felt beautiful because of our artistry. It warms my heart when clients leave such positive reviews for my lead artists and staff members. It reaffirms me that this is the industry that I belong in.

We offer our clients their before and after photos of our work and I truly believe referring to a photo is so helpful in deciding if any changes need to be made on the day of the wedding or event. We love to build relationships with our clients and have met so many amazing women through this company.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I started this company with a degree in education and a massive passion for hair and makeup, and have needed to learn several business strategies along the way. I have found several resources in the last nine years that have been incredibly helpful. I truly believe that learning should never stop and am always finding new things that might help or benefit my company, my artists, and my clients.

One of the most helpful resources that I have used and continue to use is Score. It is a free company that helps new business owners. Score mentors are paired up with business owners for their specific area of need, may it be in marketing, budgeting, advertising etc. These mentors have run highly successful companies and the advice I have received throughout the years has been incredibly useful and valuable.

One of my favorite books has been “Crucial Conversations”. It coaches the reader to have tough yet meaningful conversations when necessary. Some of the apps we use or have used as a company include, GroupMe, Slack, MileIQ, GoogleDrive, Square, Paypal and DocuSign. With technology ever expanding, we are often researching new and innovative ways to positively impact our business.
