Meet Trailblazer Aida Hatem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aida Hatem.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to tinker with objects. This led me into the field of Engineering. After receiving a B.S. and M. S. in Industrial Engineering and working in the field for many years, I left to become a stay at home Mom. Recently, I went back to my STEM roots and combined it with a newfound love of Art and working with kids. That’s how Pop Up Science and Art started.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but I was very fortunate to work with people who embrace women in the field of Engineering. Most of getting past struggles is perseverance. You will have doubts and hit roadblocks, but it is important to continue your work and effort throughout. If you like what you do and do it well, you will find success as long as you don’t give up. Any success takes time and work, but if you are pursuing something you love, you’ll be having the time of your life and the work will feel like play.

We’d love to hear more about Pop Up Science and Art.
At Pop Up Science and Art, I provide fun and unique workshops in STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) for kids and adults. One of my favorite parts about doing these classes is that I see how eager kids are to challenge themselves! They aim for the stars, try to do the impossible, get excited about complexity. When they get to explore in an organic, lightly managed way, they create a vision, take the steps needed to realize that vision, fail in the best possible way and creatively problem solve. This is the best lesson anyone can learn. I love tapping into everyone’s innate creativity and giving them an opportunity to use that creativity to solve problems and create amazing projects. Our workshops go far beyond teaching facts and processes. My goal at Pop Up Science and Art is to harness creativity and wonder to inspire a lifetime of learning.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t sell yourself short! You have gifts and abilities that are unique and will set you apart. Whether or not your boss or your peers appreciate those gifts is not important as long as you recognize and appreciate them. Jobs, bosses, coworkers will come and go. You need to learn from every experience (good and bad) you have in order to eventually create the experiences you want to have. It will take time and effort but it is well worth it.

Pricing:

  • Most workshops are $15
  • Private workshops are $75
  • Parties, valleywide, are $150
