Meet Tracie Rollins of Bible Journaling Ministries in Ahwatukee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracie Rollins.

Tracie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If you would’ve asked me five years ago if I’d be teaching others how to experience peace and joy by engaging artistically in their Bibles, I would’ve laughed in your face for multiple reasons. #1 because my art teacher in high school encouraged me to seek other modes of expression as she handed back my project, and #2 because I dreaded reading the Bible.

Reading the Bible has always been hard for me. Despite having an engineering degree and an MBA, I just didn’t get it. I tried multiple translations, studies, commentaries, and guides, but it felt like work, was boring, and I could never find enough time to sit down and study it. So for years, I didn’t. Sure, I’d volunteer at church, lead Bible study, and gracefully host life groups. But, I’d learn just enough to answer the questions, and then I’d forget what I learned the next day.

In 2015, a friend of mine introduced me to Bible journaling when she shared a link to a Facebook group. I rolled my eyes as drawings and verses filled my newsfeed, and moved on with my life.

Over a few months, I continued to see these images. I searched for a resource that provided step-by-step guidance but came up empty-handed. Then, one day, I decided to give it a whirl. I sat down with my Bible, a few stickers, colored pencils, and a pen, and randomly opened my Bible. After I finished reading the chapter, I grabbed my sticker and plopped it down on the page. I grabbed my colored pencils and started doodling images representing the verses. Then something unexpected happened.

I began to understand the Bible without needing a study guide, commentary, or help from a pastor. I also enjoyed it! I started doing it daily, and with each passing day, I found myself growing closer to God, experiencing more joy and peace in the process. It transformed my life, and in 2016 I launched Bible Journaling Ministries with a free ten day course and weekly videos that are still available at no charge.

To date, we’ve welcomed hundreds of members into our Momentum program that offers countless tutorials, printable devotions, Bible journaling kits, and more. This year we held an online Bible journaling conference that hosted almost 5,000 attendees, we launched the Promises of God podcast and published three journals. Our Bible Journaling for Beginners Facebook community that we started in 2017, now has over 26,000 members across the globe!

At Bible Journaling Ministries, we exist to encourage others to spend more time in the Word; growing closer to God with each and every moment.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, there have been many struggles! Juggling family, a career, and a startup required more hours than there were in a week. I’d spend countless nights and weekends burning the candle at both ends. I’d try to hire freelancers and employees, but they’d often take more time to train than it doing the work myself. I even invested thousands of dollars on a new website only to have it fail at launch without a fix from the developer. The good news is that every failed attempt is a lesson learned. We are a better company today because of where we’ve been. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Bible Journaling Ministries is a non-denominational, Christian business that seeks to inspire others to have a personal relationship with Christ. With Scripture as the guide, we seek to help others grow closer to God by spending time in the Word and responding creatively through art. We do this online by providing faith-based art classes, Bible journaling printable kits, devotions, podcasts, speaking engagements, and community.

What sets us apart is the ministry aspect of our business. While we care and serve each customer with excellence, we have a focus on providing for those who are less fortunate. We always offer free alternatives to our paid programs, have monthly giveaways, often partner with and promote our competitors, and care more about our mission and customers than the bottom line. We also partner with other businesses, individuals, and ministries to work towards our goal of distributing 1,000,000 Bibles to unreached people groups.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There are so many things to love about Phoenix; it’s hard to pick just one. The people are great, the location is amazing, and the weather is fabulous ten months out of twelve. If I could change one thing, it would be the 110+ degree summers!
