Meet Tom Budzak of Tom Budzak Ceramics in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Budzak.

Tom started working with clay in middle school and has continued to work in the medium ever since for 25 plus years. He is based out of Tempe, AZ who creates functional and sculptural objects. His work is influenced by ancient pottery forms, the complementary craft movement and pointillist surface decoration. Great satisfaction is taken in the designing of beautiful pieces that people can incorporate into their daily lives. A simple cup of coffee or a bowl of soup takes on a higher quality when it is enjoyed from a hand-crafted piece. All dots are individually applied one by one and all work is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Tom earned his BFA from Arizona State University and his MFA from New Mexico State University both with an emphasis in ceramics. He is currently an adjunct professor at South Mountain Community College and a Master Instructor Teacher at the Mesa Art Center along with keeping up his studio practice.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think any artist has to deal with their fair share of rejection. Keep at it and keep applying, be stubborn and eventually, you’ll start getting the things you apply for.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tom Budzak Ceramics – what should we know?
I’m a one-person operation. I make functional work for indie craft shows and to consign. My exhibition work is more sculptural for the most part. I’m known for the insane amount of dots I put on my work.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife Melissa has helped me out a lot with my business. She’s my editor and cheerleader.

Pricing:

  • Functional work is $40 to $185 depending
  • Sculptural work is $100 and up
