Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Kane.
Todd, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m an Iowa boy. Youngest of five sons. We we’re a carny family – county and state fairs mostly. We learned the value of a dollar and the importance of a handshake. That beginning shaped the man I am today.
I spent 12 years in the Army. A captain that served in Desert Storm and Bosnia before leaving to run my father’s company. Three years later I began selling insurance and training agents across the country. I made money but wasn’t happy. I was searching for the perfect career. Always wanted to be a chef, interior designer or hairstylist. At the age of 43 I closed my agency and went to beauty school — Penrose Academy in Scottsdale. I’ll never forget the first day – surrounded by women. I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?’. But like the Army, it was a system. Sections, partings, formulas and steps — I had found the perfect combination of creativity and discipline — I’ve never looked back.
Love Out Lavender has raised over $125,000. for City of Hope. Inspired by the death of my mother in 2014 and my husband’s battle with cancer, we have inspired a new generation of hairstylist to put their creativity and passion to work in the fight against cancer! 2018 will be out biggest year thanks to technology that puts giving in the palm of your hand and the partnership with major hair color manufactures like Matrix, JOICO and Red ken.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Made the career change at 43. I assumed I would have to play catchup but ironically, the greatest skill of a hairdresser is the ability to connect and listen — most 20-year old’s have not perfected that. 🙂
Building a clientele when you have existing bills is challenging. Also, having led and run businesses it was challenging to ‘follow’ effectively in the beginning. As a new stylist, I needed to develop my skills but not every environment sets you up for success — ok, let’s just be real some of these salon owners didn’t have their act together so I began renting after 6 months and have generated a clientele and successful business.
I won a competition in my first year with a company called Matrix. The program was Spread the Love — 6 recent beauty school graduate would travel the country and share their story and experience in the industry. Umm, I was the only one not in their 20’s. I LEANED SO MUCH FROM THAT EXPERIENCE! Blessed to have had the opportunity. Still with the company.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about TODDKANEHAIR.COM – what should we know?
I’m a hairstylist – a ‘pshycosmetologist’. I make people look and feel their best. I specialize in hair color. As a Matrix Artist, I travel the country teaching techniques to nearly 6000 stylist a year. This is my 7th year as a stylist and I’ve been published 12 times. What sets me apart from others? My life experience and how I connect with you. It’s all about you. I like to create a color stories with each guest. Our lives dynamic is colorful, and our hair color and personal style should reflect that. I even go as far as to lead with change. To create the look of success or happiness and let your actions follow. When you look good you feel good. It’s empowering.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I genuinely love what I do. I listen. I want you to be your best and a big part of that is feeling good about yourself and the way you look. I think I make a difference in people’s lives and I share that gift to another stylist when I teach.
