Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ Perez.
TJ, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started a little over four years ago and I never meant to make photography a profession, I just stumbled upon it. I wanted to get into photography to take photos of landscapes, astrophotography, as well as of family and friends. I took my camera everywhere, I went and jumped in with both feet. After a while my friends and family told me I should just do this for a living, taking their advice here we are three years later working with such companies as Toca Madera, Apartment Bartender, Azunia Tequila, Bulleit Whiskey, as well as having the privilege of Modern Luxury City Guide Phoenix + Scottsdale featuring my photo on the cover for an entire year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think any business just has smooth sailings and there are always bumps in the road, but I would say it has been relatively smooth for the most part. I would say one thing I have struggled with is just finding my style and niche throughout the industry which I have now found.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am the sole person in my company and I shoot/edit all of my own images. I am a photographer in the Phoenix area. I live in Ahwatukee, which is just west of Chandler and south of South Mountain. I work throughout the Phoenix Valley mostly in Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and Gilbert but I am willing to travel throughout the entire Valley. I specialize in product photography mainly in food and drink but also products of all types. I also take portraits with a darker moody vibe which is something I am known for when it comes to portraits. I am very proud to have worked with such amazing companies and the relationships I have made along the way. One thing that sets me apart is my turn around time for delivering photos and I pride myself on being able to have an extremely fast turn around time. There are a lot of photographers out there more skilled than I am, but I think my personality is something that sets me apart as well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has definitely played a major role in my life and business when it comes to photography and stumbled upon some amazing personal relationships that have turned into great business opportunities.
