Today we’d like to introduce you to Therosia.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up between prostitutes and preachers; pimps and school teachers. Scars from racism and surgery have marked me. I am acquainted with blessings and poverty. Divorce touched my home and shattered my family. Amid the pain, I tried to disappear, and sickness wanted to assist my social and artistic suicide. However, God made good on His promise to find this one that was away from the 99. Artist revived.
In short, I grew up in a broken home in one of the violent ghettos of South Phoenix. I was bullied and endured physical abuse at one of my brother’s hand. I tried to hide who I am, thinking if I was less others would hate me less. I know that to be a lie now.
In 8th grade a chemical fire in my neighborhood caused me to develop a condition called Pseudotumor Cerebri (Idiopathic intracranial hypertension https://g.co/kgs/XPoZHg). I had to be homeschooled, and art was my elective. It was a private art lessons.
I was bitter, but I met my spiritual father, Rabbi Joseph Troxler who loved me and led me back to my faith around 15 or 16. He told me who I was truly. It was healing. Eventually, that reconnection to God healed me physically too. In that, I knew I was created to sing the songs and create the images that walk with people along their journey like love walked along with me in my journey.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a spoken word, vocal and visual artist. I am very inspired by the journey into intimacy and discovery of beauty and wealth in the human soul. I firmly believe that each person is a reflection of God and that if I want to know God better. I must love and honor His reflection in each person. So create from that aspect and the desire to encourage and uncover the truth of who each of us.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Earl Nightingale said, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” My goal is to be a voice of inspiration, and I already do that. Therefore, I am already successful. I am consistently realizing my worthy ideal. Further, I get paid to do it and am developing into a better businesswoman daily.
The characteristics need to be a successful artist must all be taught and developed. No one is born that way. One must be relentless, honest with oneself and in love with the dream.
