Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Zech.
Theresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ten years ago I moved here with my family from Wisconsin. I left my ten year career at American Girl in Store Design to take on a design position at PetSmart. We couldn’t wait to leave the snow! And now that we are here…we wish we would have done it sooner. I have always loved architecture and the design of a home. I have debated all my life on getting into interior design but decided I really enjoy Real Estate and helping people with their next chapter in their life.
So four years ago, while my job was going through a transition, I decided to get my Real Estate License. I started out part-time but made the transition to full time and am absolutely loving it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Going from the corporate world to being your own boss isn’t as easy as it seems. First I couldn’t shake the 8-5 mentality. I was always up at eight and at my desk. It was good for it kept me focused at home, but I quickly learned that I would be working nights and weekends. So such a strict 8-5 daily schedule wasn’t necessary.
It is easy, when you are accountable to only yourself, to let your day get away from you. I had to begin calendar blocking each day. Now I am always focused on “winning the day”! Checking off the small things I want to accomplish each day, so in 30 or 60 days I would look back and feel great on what I have done. If I were to only focus on the big picture, I would never start!
Also, working in the corporate world, I had a consistent paycheck every two weeks. Now I have to truly earn what I do. This is my business and I strive to be the real estate agent my family and friends trust and the one they refer to others. That is how I run my business. I don’t knock on doors, call expired listings or call FSBO. I don’t believe in that. I want people to want to work with me and see the value in what I can bring.
Tell us more about your work.
I take pride in truly getting to know someone. Each and every person and their situation is different. I don’t see it as a paycheck, I see it as helping someone with the next phase of their life! Every home has a story, so when listing a home, it is my job to focus on and feature the greatest attributes of that home to sell it in the shortest amount of time for the greatest amount of money. I work with the sellers to talk about their goals and put a plan together on how to get them there.
For buyers, I like to do an initial buyer consultation to understand what they are looking for. Help them understand the process and figure out their wants vs needs to get them to where they want to be. This process is NOT ABOUT ME. It is all about my clients. It is about their next chapter and I am here to help them get there.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I get a text message or phone call from one of my clients to say thank you. The smile on their face when I hand them their keys. And when they tell me it was the best real estate experience they have ever had. That makes you get goosebumps and you know you are in the right business. I love what I do!
