Meet Theresa Godfrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Godfrey.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
A friend told me I had a gift for making places more beautiful than they were before. I’ve always had a knack for craftiness, and I even worked as a graphic designer once, but it wasn’t until last year when I pulled out a watercolor palette that I felt as though I had finally found myself. It started as a daily project to learn how to use a few art supplies that had been collecting dust on my shelves, but that practice healed me of my postpartum depression and showed me the real type of beauty I can create. I’ve been painting for just over one year now, and I don’t think I’ll stop any time soon.

Please tell us about your art.
I mostly work in watercolor and calligraphy, with a few other occasional media. I love painting galaxies and desert landscapes, but I recently did a series of matryoshka dolls that was a new and fun territory to dive into. I studied Russian in college and I’m still really interested in Slavic folk arts and literature. There is just as much magic in the desert sky and plants as there is in those folk tales, and I guess that’s the message of my art: there is magic all around us.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think artists have always been a vehicle to show a view of the world that others might not have noticed with their own eyes and to immortalize the events and places that we do witness.
