Meet Terrance Kelsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrance Kelsey.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been doing art since I was a kid. I was always attracted to street/urban art and used to always incorporate that style within the mediums I worked with. Whether it was paint, colored pencils, charcoal, or pen. When I attended junior college, I discovered graphic art And I instantly gravitated to it and it became my medium of choice. Even during my undergrad at ASU, I tried to incorporate as much graphic art into any of my projects as much As I could and mixed it with my street/urban culture influence.

Now after years of working with different programs I’ve learned many different techniques and ways to work with graphic art. I’ve really been able to hone my skills and start to really branch out on my artistic journey. Now with the work I make I’m not held only to the influence of street/urban art. My work now incorporates inspiration from hip-hop, African American culture, “nerd” culture, and much more. By expanding my thinking and allowing what inspires me to come out more in my work. its Helped me to be more creative and further improve as an artist and assist in my continuous journey to be internationally known.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a graphic artist so all My work is done on my laptop using adobe programs. I make pieces digitally then I have them directly printed onto canvas pieces to showcase and sell. My work has Elements of a lot of hip-hop, and most recently more African American culture. I am a big hip-hop fan so that’s definitely my biggest influence. The culture of hip-hop is so unique and just one of a kind. When I hear artist like Naps, outkast, talib kweli, notorious big, big pun, Tupac, wu-tang, Kendrick Lamar it’s gives me a sense of peace and allows me to shut out so much nonsense that goes on around me. Hip-hop grounds me in ways that most can’t understand. Hearing an artist use their ability to speak about various issues that need to be discussed, within society and culture is what continues to give motivation and helps me to continue to press forward with the things I do. So, the best way to give respect to the legends, innovators, and creators of this culture is through my art.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
