Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor (TJ) Houchin.
Hi Taylor (TJ), we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As an above-average athlete in Rapid City, SD, I lacked a few crucial elements to be effective at the next level. I dreamed of playing college football. I contacted Benson Sports Training in Rapid City, SD, and started training there. It completely transformed my career and raised my ceiling athletically and mentally. I ended up earning a scholarship to Northern State University. I started for 4 years, had a decent career, and wanted to play football at the next level. I was under-looked and had minimal interest from NFL Agents and Teams. I moved to the Phoenix area to train athletes and be around more high-level football players. After a while of attending tryouts (open and invited), I had an unfortunate injury. I made a head-to-head contact in a flag football game (smart move) and broke my cheekbone, eye socket, and jaw. My injury required me to have surgery to reconstruct the left side of my face. After a few years of recovery, I’m working on opening my facility with my future business partner. My business partner is an athlete I’ve had the privilege of training for the past 5ish years. He has seen my vision and process and believes in it.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. Injuries, COVID-19, changes in business models and plans, rising rates and interest in every facility, gyms failing everywhere, but the approach stays the same: prioritize and execute.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in training athletes to perform at the highest level they can. We have a tremendous vertical jump/power program with countless spreadsheets of program results and improvements. We also specialize in speed and overall athleticism. We would rather have athletes that could run through or over a brick wall than look like one. Some work on showing muscles; we create Go Muscles. We offer small group memberships, sports team training, and private (1 on 1 training). We have a variety of clientele, from young kids to professional athletes. Former athletes in their 40s-60s who want to continue to move pain-free like an athlete. This includes testing and analytics that track progress, develop goal-setting skills, and a realistic pathway to achieve them. If you aren’t testing, you are guessing. Once we have our HQ facility open, more services and exclusive offerings will be available.
What does success mean to you?
Success is different for every individual. Lately, my version of success has been being more mindful of life and living in the moment. I find myself itching to progress and grow my business, and it causes me to forget how far I’ve come. Long story short, success is subjective and relates to each individual’s values, which can be dynamic and change, just like life.
