Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Lamb.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Normally when you ask a hairstylist this question, they say they’ve always wanted to do hair! For me, I only just started five years ago on a complete whim! At the time, I was in college for dental hygiene (totally different haha) and had a full-time job. I actually started braiding just for fun because I was jealous of all my friends that knew how, so one day, I forced myself to sit down and watch a hundred YouTube tutorials and practiced until I had it perfect.
I started out with the basics and then eventually grew confident enough to start being more creative and putting together fun, original styles that I came up with. I had two sisters that I forced to let me practice on because they have the best hair ever! From there, I decided to start an Instagram so I could have a place to share my work for others. I had no intention of it turning into what it is today, just wanted to share what I loved! I eventually started to gain a real following and girls asked if I could do their hair for prom and homecoming, so I did that on the side for about a year. Then I started getting requests for weddings and I was so nervous because a bride’s hair is a BIG DEAL.
I’m so glad I started doing that though, because I fell in love with bridal styling! Soon after I had a midlife crisis at 19, decided to drop out of traditional school and go to cosmo school! The scariest but the best thing I’ve ever done! Now, I’ve been working at Habit Salon, which was the one and only salon I wanted to work at and I love it! Wedding seasons get completely booked a year in advance and I’m able to enjoy my passion every single day 🙂
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I hate to say it but it’s been a pretty smooth road and I am so grateful for that. The hardest part though, was the initial jump to go to hair school. I think a lot of people look down at cosmo and esthetician schools as if they aren’t ‘real’ schooling. So deciding to drop out of traditional school and chase a hobby on a whim was the craziest part! But so glad I did it!
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
My business is Taylor Lamb Hair and I specialize in Braids & Bridal. I’m most known for my big, messy, boho braids that you can find on my Instagram account! I think my boho style of braiding is what attracts so many brides. Aside from styling, I work behind the chair and do bright white blondes, balayage, melted brondes and extensions during the week!
As humble as I try to be, I am very proud of myself for how far I’ve come! I remember when I first started, I would tag big hair accounts and magazines and now I’m featured in all of them several times, nominated for huge awards and partnered with huge companies. It’s crazy to see your dreams come true! So I am most proud that I somehow made that happen.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Take EVERY opportunity I was given instead of turning them down because I was scared! I held myself back a lot by deciding to turn down some huge offers because I was fearful of whether I was really good enough. I’ve learned that you should always take what’s given to you because every time I decided to just get over my fears and do it, it always ended up being one of the best decisions that I was able to grow from!
