Meet Taylor Froiland of Medmetrics Compounding Pharmacy in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Froiland.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It was 2013 and Adam and I was working as pharmacists in a busy retail chain pharmacy. It had only been 3 years since graduating and we had already realized we were in the wrong place. We weren’t able to spend enough time interacting with patients and were just counting pills and verifying prescriptions all day. It’s not right to make someone wait an hour to get their medicine and then only get 30 seconds to go over any questions they had about their medicine or just their general health.

It was then that we flipped the switch and have never looked back since. We wrote a business plan, put in all on the line and got an SBA loan and opened the first location and are already looking to open our second location in Scottsdale.

Pharmacists and independent pharmacies can offer so much more than big-box retail and that’s exactly what we built. We made sure to build something that will grow to be the go-to pharmacy for the local community. It’s a place where we work much more closely with doctors and other healthcare providers and always keep the patient as number one. We listen, we make ourselves very accessible and that leads to much healthier and happier patients. Since opening, we can barely keep up with the growth but we’re willing to put in an unlimited amount of time in order to ensure success. The Arizona healthcare space needs a much greater small business presence in Arizona and we fully plan on making that happen.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening any successful small business is a struggle. Small business owners and entrepreneurs are addicted to the struggle though. We have been working 80-hour workweeks since we opened but it only feels like 40 hours to us. We love it and it feels great to finally help people. There’s been a lot of challenges but we’ll always figure them out and turn them into a positive.

At the same time, it’s been a smooth ride because when you are providing true value to patients, fast growth always follows. It’s a breath of fresh air for people when they find out we’re here. Once a patient transfers their prescriptions to us they stay with us.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Medmetrics Compounding Pharmacy story. Tell us more about the business.
We make ourselves as accessible as possible. Pharmacists are in the perfect position as healthcare providers because we see patients once a month. Many people know us as the pharmacists that don’t push pills. We keep ourselves on the cutting edge of medicine so when someone has a health problem we can guide them and it’s not by just recommending a drug to treat a disease. We incorporate Functional Medicine into our care plans meaning our ultimate goal is getting patients off medicines whenever possible and actually making them better. Every patient is different and we are most proud of being able to almost always provide a solution or a plan to help someone who has been struggling with a health issue and thought there were no answers.

We are the same as our competition in the way that we fill regular and compounded prescriptions and take most insurance plans and copays will stay the same, but much different for a lot of other reasons:

1. We’re available when you want to talk to the Pharmacist. You can call us, email us or we even offer Telemedicine where you can consult with a Pharmacist or see a Physician’s Assistant.
2. We’re much more convenient – we work with your doctor to manage your meds and your refills. If you’re picking up your medicine in the store you’ll never wait in line more than 5 minutes or we offer free delivery to your doorstep anywhere in the state.
3. People love us – just look at our reviews online compared to chains.
4. We offer custom compounding. People with allergies or sensitivities can get almost anything custom made without fillers, dyes, and other potentially harmful additives. We do this for newborns all the way up to our oldest patient who was 106 years old. We also make Pet Meds like bacon flavored chew treats for your dog or salmon flavored oral liquid for a kitty. We can do it all.
5. Everything we do is designed around making things easy for the patient and truly saving them time, money, and get them the best care. This goes for the whole family and your pets!
6. We promise to try to get you the best price on your medicine. And we are almost always cheaper than any of the competition. If there’s one thing I could stress to people is to shop around and always call us! I can’t count the number of people that find out they are overpaying. And if we’re not the cheapest I’ll tell them if they’re getting a great deal already.
7. We’re insurance friendly. No more expensive medications. We work with your physician and insurance company for you and always try to get your medication covered whenever possible. If something isn’t covered we’ll work with your doctor to try to find an alternative.
8. We have a free mobile app that helps patients manage their medications and gets them easy refills.

The thing we are most proud of as a company is being able to provide people with transparency and truth about their health which is hard to come by in our current world. There is a lot of snake oil being sold out there these days and it’s hard for people to know when something is legit. We help them with that.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck always plays a role in my life and business. It’s the case with everyone’s life, but it’s what you do with the good and bad that matters! I consider myself lucky to have had a horrible job in a super-busy retail pharmacy which made me want to start this business. I think I’m lucky because we opened during a time when the economy has been in a major uptrend. I’m always on the lookout for good AND bad luck when it “happens” to me so I can instantly take advantage of the situation to spin it in my favor and turn it into an opportunity.
