Meet Taryn Pollock of Serendipity Cinematography in Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taryn Pollock.

Taryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The word Serendipity means to find something great by accident and that is exactly how my business came about. I was at a crossroads in my career and my best friend was getting married and she knew I had a background in television and knew a ton of videographers so she asked me to help her find someone to film her wedding. So I assembled the first Serendipity Cinematography team. We filmed her wedding and at the end of the night I looked at my team and said “Well what did you think?” They said “We LOVED it!!” And the first Serendipity film was created!! 13 years later, 1700 wedding films later I now have 8 teams of cinematographers and an editing staff. And I have never looked back!! Everything happened at the right moment at the exact right time so I just knew my brand had to be called Serendipity.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anything about being a small business owner could be considered smooth… So many challenges. One of the biggest ones though has been the growing pains of expanding your brand. Figuring out how to grow and still maintain the integrity and quality of your product. The other challenge has been learning to delegate and trust the people you bring into your organization so that you can start to enjoy some of the freedoms of owning your own business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Serendipity Cinematography story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is Serendipity Cinematography. We specialize in wedding films. We are known for our unique storytelling style in our wedding films. I am most proud of the fact that we are mostly a female based wedding cinematography company. The majority of the wedding filmmaking industry is male and I have worked really hard to find female cinematographers to tell our wedding stories. The majority of my filmmakers and editors are women. I feel like since the majority of the wedding decisions are made by a female why isn’t the story of the day told by women. We have a deeper emotional connection to all of the elements of the wedding day.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck hasn’t played much of a role. It has been a lot of careful planning calculated risks and good old fashioned hustle.
