Meet Tara Lowther of Organic Birthing in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Lowther.

Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ten years ago, I started my career in the medical field. After a few years of working in a hospital I got to really see how things work there and when I got pregnant (much like many other medical professionals because I have them in my classes all the time!) with my first baby I decided I did not want that for myself and actually tried for a home birth. I took the hospital childbirth class, read a bunch of books, and thought my own training would count for something.

My husband was not sure what his role was so he just kind of hung back, but my baby was in a funny position called posterior which lengthened the labor, and I ended up wanting to transfer to the hospital I was working at and get an epidural. When I got there, it was immediately a battle. I was being questioned on every choice I made, and I had to really fight for the minimal interventions I wanted. Pitocin and even a c-section were discussed and pushed onto me.

Thankfully, I did have my training and knew that my baby and I were safe, so was confident enough to battle for my preferences to have a minimally invasive birth. I did not, however, feel satisfied with my experience, respected, or listened too. And through it became very passionate about empowering and educating parents for this incredibly special time of life. I then started training with a midwife as her student and assistant and during this time witnessed a mother using HypnoBirthing techniques to birth her baby.

It was absolutely incredible to witness. She was peaceful, relaxed, bonding with her partner, and seemed very comfortable. Not at all like the movies! Of course, I wanted that for myself, so when I got pregnant with baby #2, we took the HypnoBirthing class and had a completely different experience.

My labor was much faster, way more comfortable, and my partner was super hands-on and involved which helped me tremendously and bonded us together as a team in a way that has completely altered the way we parent. I have been teaching HypnoBirthing childbirth classes for six years now and have expanded to multiple teachers and class offerings as well as online classes, phone consultations, a YouTube channel, doula services, and many other prenatal and birth support services.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well, I wear many hats. I am a homeschooling mom of four kids 8 and under, I own Organic Birthing, and also Phoenix Fixer Uppers fix and flipping homes here in Phoenix, so I am just super busy! Being a mom boss is hard!

Balancing family life and work is very tricky, but I freaking love what I do so my passion gives me tons of energy. The biggest obstacle I face is that woman just don’t know that birth doesn’t have to be traumatic and scary! 75% of women in the UK are taking HypnoBirthing classes, and even the Royal family are known, HypnoBirthing mamas.

Unfortunately, it is not as well know here in the U.S., but once woman start experiencing the effects it is sure to take off here too, I have seen a huge increase in demand over the years. I just want moms to know about this!

Please tell us about Organic Birthing.
All birthing is organic birthing because we are all living matter. I want to encourage and empower woman to have positive birth experiences. I believe the way in which we carry and birth our babies sets our family dynamics and expectations for our partners and ourselves as parents for years to come. I know what it is like to have a negative birth experience vs. an incredibly empowering one so my business is very personal to me and I am incredibly passionate about it.

One thing that truly sets my classes apart is that nothing is taught in a scary manner and in fact, we even focus some of our time on taking away the fear of birth, because when you have fear, you release stress hormones into the body which will lengthen the labor and make it more uncomfortable. HypnoBirthing utilizes breathing and relaxation/ meditation techniques to decrease stress and help labor go faster and be more comfortable.
