Meet Tami Silk of Desert Sky Express

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tami Silk.

Hi Tami, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At the time I started Desert Sky Express there was a need for a legal, reliable, safe and friendly airport transportation service in the Goodyear and surrounding area.
I was in the middle of starting my life over after a divorce and the kids being grown. It was probably the craziest idea to start a new business from the ground up with no backing. Thankfully I had lived in our community for 15 years at that time and had made quite a few connections. Those connections were a big part in helping me grow. It started out with just me and quickly became too much for me alone to handle. So every year I’ve added a driver and now have 3 drivers besides myself.
My son was also important in starting the company as he knew how to design my website, now maintains it and basically my tech guy because I am hopeless at it.
I believe the success of my company is three parts. One, my dedication to working 24/7 for the first two years with little down time and no days off. Second is my team of drivers, they are trustworthy, professional and friendly. Three is our clients, they have been loyal, supportive and helped spread the word of the company.
This year, I also added Desert Sky Travel Adventures. As a certified travel agent I can now book your complete travel vacation from home pick up to home drop off and everything in between. A full travel conceirge service.
As I head into this 4th year of business I’m hoping only more growth is possible. We love our regular clients and love meeting new ones that become regulars.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road and I constantly have to compete with all the illegal companies popping up all the time. These companies do not carry commercial insurance as required by the state, are not ADOT approved, carry proper license or background check their drivers. This means they can undercut us by a lot and the most frustrating part is ADOT not shutting them down.

We’ve been impressed with Desert Sky Express, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What’s next?
Plans for the future are to continue on an upward trajectory. Continuing to grow both with more clients and of course that means adding more drivers. I will also be looking to add or make an existing driver a manager so I can take time to breathe a little.
